Meredith and Derek are on the rocks in new season of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

'Grey's Anatomy" has released the first trailer for its upcoming 11th season, and it looks like there may be trouble in paradise for the drama's central couple.

Picking up on a big fight in last season's cliffhanger finale, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) tells her husband Derek (Patrick Dempsey) that she won't go to Washington, DC, instead opting to stay in Seattle.

With the couple facing a separation — at least by distance — Meredith finds comfort in the arms of Alex (Justin Chambers), while saying, "I just don't know if my marriage can survive this."

"Grey's Anatomy" returns Sept. 25 at a new earlier time of 8 p.m. on ABC.

Man suspected of killing 4 arrested, boy found safe

HUDSON, Fla. — SWAT teams swarmed a downtown Tampa hotel early Friday, arresting a suspect in the killing of four people whose bodies were found piled on top of each other and being circled by birds. A 4-year-old autistic boy believed to be the man's son was found safe at the hotel, Tampa police said.

Police said they took Adam Matos, 28, into custody at the Floridian Palace Hotel and multiple charges are pending. The child, Ismael Tristan Santisteban, was with him.

A tip led multiple law enforcement agencies to the Floridian, a recently reopened landmark hotel in downtown Tampa across the street from the federal courthouse.

The Tampa Tribune reports police used a ruse to lure Matos out of his room and away from the child. Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said Matos was caught by surprise and didn't put up a fight. Matos was in Tampa with plans to leave the area with the boy, Nocco said.

The sheriff's office worked with Tampa police to devise "a plan so this would end safely," Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor said.

Castor said the child seemed fine. "He is in good spirits," she said during a news conference Friday morning.

Castor said she did not know whether a weapon was found in the room. But she said county investigators were attempting to get a search warrant for the hotel room.

The search for Matos and the boy began Thursday after sheriff's deputies in nearby Pasco County conducted a welfare check at a Hudson home. The deputies who stopped by the home found no one home, but noticed a bad odor in the area. They walked down the street toward an area where birds were circling and found four bodies — two men and two women — piled on top of each other. He said they had apparently been there for several days.

Nocco said the scene inside the home alarmed investigators.

Matos quickly became a suspect. He had been seen in the area recently and Nocco said the killings were not a random act.

While at the Tampa hotel, Castor said, Matos used his own name to check in around midnight and he had gone to a bus station near the hotel to ask about routes and bus fares.

Nocco said Matos is either the boy's biological father or a father figure to him. The boy had last been seen at his Pasco County home Aug. 28. He said the boy's mother called the sheriff's office that day and said Matos had threatened her with a knife.

Officials have not released the names of the victims or said how they may be related to the boy and to Matos.

The investigation was continuing.

‘Mr. Turner’ is an exquisite portrait of an artist

British character actor Timothy Spall — best known to mainstream audiences as Wormtail in the "Harry Potter'' series — delivers an Oscar-calibre tour de force reminiscent of Charles Laughton, as eccentric painter JMW Turner in "Mr. Turner,'' which showed at the Toronto Film Festival between its Cannes premiere and its showing at this year's New York Film Festival.

Spall, whose portly, Dickens-esque character communicates mostly in snorts, keeps you hooked in Mike Leigh's long, slow and exquisitely beautiful biopic set in the late 19th century. The setting vacillates back and forth between London — where Spall disdains his family and the snobbish contemporary art scene — and the English seaside, where he paints his maritime masterpieces and falls into a relationship with a landlady (Dorothy Atkinson) who isn't interested in his fame.

"Mr. Turner'' is a very special film that will open in New York on Dec. 19.

Terrorist leader confirmed dead after US airstrike

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon on Friday confirmed the death of the leader of the al-Shabab terror group, Ahmed Abdi Godane, who was the target of a U.S. airstrike Monday in Somalia.

The Pentagon's press secretary, Rear Adm. John Kirby, confirmed the death in a brief written statement.

The White House declared a counterterrorism success.

"Godane's removal is a major symbolic and operational loss to the largest al-Qaida affiliate in Africa and reflects years of painstaking work by our intelligence, military and law enforcement professionals," a White House statement said.

U.S. officials had said after the strike on Monday that U.S. special operations forces using manned and drone aircraft had destroyed an encampment and a vehicle using several Hellfire missiles and laser-guided munitions. But they did not confirm that Godane had been killed until Friday.

The 11 buzziest films at the Toronto Film Festival

The stars are pointed north as the Toronto Film International Film Festival opens Thursday night in the Canadian metropolis, where hundreds of films seeking awards traction, publicity or buyers will unspool over the next 10 days.

Here are some with big buzz:

'The Judge'

Robert Downey Jr. doffs his Iron Man suit for the first time in years to play a hotshot city lawyer who returns to his small home town when his estranged judge father (Robert Duvall) is accused of murder. In theaters Oct. 10.

'The Humbling'

Al Pacino received some of his best notices in years for this adaptation of a Philip Roth novel that premiered at the Venice Film Festival — the film, not so much.

He plays an aged, suicidal actor who becomes involved with a younger woman (Greta Gerwig). No US release date.

'St. Vincent'

Toronto has declared Friday "Bill Murray Day'' in honor of the beloved actor, and his latest is a comedy-drama in which he plays a misanthropic veteran who bonds with a young neighbor. In theaters Oct. 24.

'Foxcatcher'

Direct from rave reviews in Cannes, this heavyweight Oscar contender stars Steve Carell, Mark Ruffalo and Channing Tatum in a fact-based drama about a demented du Pont heir and his private wrestling team. In theaters Nov. 14.

'Men, Women & Children'

The latest from director Jason Reitman ("Up in the Air'') is a comedy-drama about sexual frustration with Ansel Elgort, Adam Sandler, Emma Thompson, Judy Greer and Jennifer Garner. In theaters Oct. 1.

'The Good Lie'

Reese Witherspoon adopts a Sudanese refugee in this drama from the producers of "The Blind Side.'' In theaters Oct. 3.

'The Theory of Everything'

Eddie Redmayne ("Les Misérables'') goes for the Oscar gold as disabled genius Stephen Hawking in this biopic based on a memoir by his wife (played by Felicity Jones). In theaters Nov. 7.

'The Equalizer'

Home Depot employee Denzel Washington is secretly a retired CIA operative — at least until a beaten prostitute (Chloë Grace Moretz) prompts him to go after the Russian mob in Boston.

Rest assured Denzel's not ready for an easy paycheck in "The Expendables 4'' after this crackling action thriller that may well launch a franchise. In theaters Oct. 26.

'This Is Where I Leave You'

All-star (Tina Fey, Jason Bateman, Jane Fonda) black comedy about a dysfunctional family reunited by the death of their patriarch. In theaters Sept. 19.

'Wild'

Reese Witherspoon's other comeback attempt has attracted rave reviews — at least for her performance — out of Telluride. She plays a woman who hikes 1,100 miles in a film directed by Jean-Marc Vallée ("Dallas Buyers Club''). In theaters Dec. 5.

'The Imitation Game'

The Oscar buzz out of Telluride is already deafening for yet another biopic — this one starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing, the gay math genius who cracked the Nazis' Enigma Code during World War II. In theaters Oct. 21.

Elderly woman hit by minivan in Upper East Side

An elderly woman was critically injured when she was hit by a minivan and dragged down an Upper East Side street, officials said.

The victim was in the crosswalk at East 98th Street and Madison Avenue when a silver Town and Country with North Carolina plates, hanging a left swung a left around 9:50 a.m., officials said.

"[The van] hit her and she few up and back down and he kept on going with her under him," said Tracy Molloy, 39, who was waiting for the bus when she saw the accident.

"He was trying to make the light like every New York City driver," she said.

"He drove completely over her, over her legs. He must have felt the bump and heard people scream so he stopped," said another witness Neud Clermont.

The driver of the car stopped and witnesses ran over to help the woman.

"I walked over and started to pull her dress down, and the driver was panicking. He was like, 'Oh my god, I didn't see you!'" said Clermont.

A worker from nearby Mt Sinai Hospital rushed over to help before she was transported to the hospital's emergency room, officials said.

"She was breathing but not conscious, and her face was swollen," Molloy said.

"I was crying, trying to find her ID in her bag."

Deron Williams no fan of living in New York

Deron Williams is still getting used to life in the big city.

The Nets point guard, who was raised in Dallas, explained the difficulties of living in New York with four kids in a recent interview with Resident Magazine.

"I'm not going to lie," Williams said. "I don't really feel so much like a New Yorker. I grew up in an apartment in Texas where you could send your kids outside like, 'Yeah, go play in the sun.' Here it's more challenging.

"The process of getting them into school is a nightmare. Even private schools where you pay are an ordeal. In Utah, you just send your kids to the first public school in the area because they're all great."

Williams was drafted by the Jazz and played the first five and a half seasons in Salt Lake City before being dealt to the then-New Jersey Nets. Williams signed a five-year max deal in the summer of 2012 to become the face of the franchise as it headed to Brooklyn.

"In Utah, you just send your kids to the first public school in the area because they're all great," said Williams, who has an apartment in Tribeca.

"Truth is, we enjoy getting away from the hustle and bustle and going back to Utah every summer. It's a relief to take that timeout. No traffic. No crowds. My daughters still have their friends there. There's a big backyard.

They go to the pool; the playground and they jump on the trampoline. Kids running wild and free here…? I don't think so."

Well, at least Williams enjoys riding the subway from time to time.

"What constitutes a New Yorker?" Williams asked. "Taking the subway… which, by the way, I love to take. … Yes, of course I have a chauffeured car, but the subway is way faster. Second thing is the New York/Brooklyn accent – which I don't have. Third thing is New Yorkers are tough. Or at least they think they are."

Striking McDonald’s employees arrested in Times Square

More than a dozen disgruntled McDonald's employees went on strike outside of the fast food giant in Times Square Thursday and were arrested — after they sat in the middle of the street, blocking rush-hour traffic, cops said.

"We know that we have momentum on our side. We know that people like you have our backs. And this Thursday we are committed to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to win $15 an hour and the right to form a union without retaliation," according to a post on NYWorkersRising.org, a website for organizing strikes stated.

The workers, 14 men, and five women, participated in the "Rally for Fast Food Workers" outside the restaurant on 42nd Street near Seventh Avenue around 7:50 a.m. but took it to the street where they set up shop in protest, according to police.

Oncoming cars had to maneuver their way around the mischievous group but there were no reported injuries or accidents, authorities said.

Mo’ne Davis steals Kershaw’s spotlight with perfect first pitch

That Mo'ne Davis-Clayton Kershaw pitchoff? Let's call it a draw.

Davis, the Little League ace from Philadelphia, had confidently challenged Kershaw, the Dodgers ace who is not of this world, to a mysterious "pitchoff." Kershaw didn't know what that entailed, so he responded by inviting the 13-year-old sensation to visit Los Angeles.

A duel never materialized Tuesday night at Chavez Ravine, but the two pitchers showed why they have owned this summer on the mound.

Davis handed out autographs, including to one to a starstruck Yasiel Puig.

Davis threw out the ceremonial first pitch — and fired a dart of a strike, outside corner at the knees.

Then the 26-year-old Kershaw went out and dominated the Nationals for eight innings to improve his record to 17-3, lower his ERA to an outrageous 1.70 and all but clinch the Cy Young Award. MVP isn't out of the question either.
