Prison workers in KKK planned to murder black ex-inmate: officials

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 02 April 2015 | 23.16

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Officials say three current and former employees of Florida's Department of Corrections were members of the Ku Klux Klan who planned to kill a former inmate who is black.

Attorney General Pam Bondi's office says they planned the murder after the inmate's release from prison as retaliation for a fight between him and one of the workers.

Bondi's office says Thomas Jordan Driver, David Elliot Morgan and Charles Thomas Newcomb each were arrested Thursday on one state count of conspiracy to commit murder.

Driver and Morgan are employees of the Department of Corrections, and Newcomb is a former corrections employee.

The case will be prosecuted in Columbia County in north Florida.

Crystal Cathedral megachurch founder is dead at 88

ARTESIA, Calif. — The Rev. Robert H. Schuller, the Southern California televangelist and author who beamed his upbeat messages on faith and redemption to millions from his landmark Crystal Cathedral only to see his empire crumble in his waning years, has died. He was 88.

Schuller died early Thursday at a care facility in Artesia, daughter Carol Schuller Milner said. In 2013, he was diagnosed with a tumor in his esophagus that had spread to his lymph nodes and began treatment.

Once a charismatic and well-known presence on the televangelist circuit, Schuller faded from view in recent years after watching his church collapse amid a disastrous leadership transition and sharp declines in viewership and donations that ultimately forced the ministry to file for bankruptcy.

The soaring, glass-paned Crystal Cathedral — the touchstone of Schuller's storied ministry — was sold to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange in 2011, and Schuller lost a legal battle the following year to collect more than $5 million from his former ministry for claims of copyright infringement and breach of contract.

Schuller, who preached in a flowing purple robe and outsized aviator glasses, suffered a mild heart attack in 1997 but was quickly back on the pulpit, saying "the positive person" is not afraid of life's surprises. In July 2013, he was hospitalized for days after a late-night fall at his home in Orange.

Schuller's evangelical Protestant ministry, part of the Reformed Church in America, was a product of modern technology. He and his late wife, Arvella, an organist, started a ministry in 1955 with $500 when he began preaching from the roof of a concession stand at a drive-in movie theater southeast of Los Angeles.

The church's motto — "Come as you are in the family car" — tapped into the burgeoning Southern California auto culture and the suburban boom of post-World War II America.

By 1961, the church had a brick-and-mortar home — a "walk-in/drive-in church" — and Schuller began broadcasting the "Hour of Power" in 1970.

In 1980, he built the towering glass-and-steel Crystal Cathedral to house his booming TV ministry, which was broadcast live each week from the cathedral's airy and sunlit 2,800-seat sanctuary. At its peak, in the 1990s, the program had 20 million viewers in about 180 countries.

Schuller's message — that "Possibility Thinking" and love of God overcome hardships — was a uniquely American blend of Bible and psychology. It was inspired by late author Norman Vincent Peale, who wrote "The Power of Positive Thinking." Schuller also wrote more than 30 books, including several best-sellers.

"He was a young guy like me, and he was going out there and trying new things," said his grandson, Bobby Schuller, who pastors his own church that includes some of his grandfather's former congregants. "He did so many amazing, innovative things."

Unlike other televangelists, the senior Schuller's message lacked fire-and-brimstone condemnations or conservative political baggage.

"The classical error of historical Christianity is that we have never started with the value of the person. Rather, we have started from the 'unworthiness of the sinner,' and that starting point has set the stage for the glorification of human shame in Christian theology," he wrote in his book "Self-Esteem: The New Reformation."

Schuller had admirers that ranged from fellow evangelist Billy Graham to Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan. He also was among the first foreign religious figures invited to preach on Russian television.

Fundamentalists attacked him as a heretic and humanist for statements they believed denied the need for personal repentance of sin and for his tolerance of Jewish, Roman Catholic and other theologies.

His friendship with President Bill Clinton raised some eyebrows among the conservative Republicans of his Orange County congregation and prompted a deluge of irate letters and telephone calls.

In response, Schuller gave a sermon on tolerance.

"I do let people know how great their sins and miseries are," he said in a 1992 radio interview. "I don't do that by standing in a pulpit and telling them they're sinners. …The way I do it is ask questions. Are you happy? Do you have problems, what are they? So then I come across as somebody who cares about them."

Schuller sometimes cited the example of his daughter Carol, who lost part of her leg because of a motorcycle accident in 1978 but went on to become a champion skier.

"When tough times come, we need to take tough action, to hold on until the tide turns for the better, to tenaciously dig in and bloom where we are planted," he wrote.

Tough times were in store for Schuller, too.

In 2006, Schuller's only son, 51-year-old Robert A. Schuller, was installed as senior pastor, the start of a carefully choreographed leadership transition. Although a father-son succession is rare in the Reformed Church in America, the Schullers considered the church a "family business" and the move was sanctioned by the national church, officials said.

But the organization fell on difficult times after the younger Schuller's installation, and he left amid a bitter family feud in fall 2008. His father had removed him from the "Hour of Power" broadcasts, and he quit as senior pastor a few weeks later.

Sheila Schuller Coleman, one of Schuller's daughters, took over as the church's top administrator, and a stable of preachers, including her and her father, handled preaching duties on the "Hour of Power."

She, too, ultimately left, taking some congregants with her to start a new ministry.

The tumult in the pulpit worsened a pre-existing decline in viewership and donations, and in 2010, Crystal Cathedral ministries filed for bankruptcy, citing debt of more than $43 million.

Bankruptcy filings indicated the ministry was paying significant tax-exempt housing allowances to Schuller family members and insiders. The allowances were legal but raised concerns among vendors and other creditors who had gone unpaid for months.

In 2012, Schuller and his wife quit the board of directors in a dispute over copyright infringement and breach of contract. That same year, they lost a legal bid to recover more than $5 million from their former ministry.

Schuller's grandson, Bobby Schuller, took the remaining congregation and founded a new church. Bobby Schuller also took over the "Hour of Power," broadcasting from a new location.

Robert Harold Schuller was born in Alton, Iowa, in 1926, and was ordained by the Reformed Church in America in 1950. He was pastor of Ivanhoe Reformed Church in Chicago from 1950 to 1955 before moving to California.

Besides his son, Schuller and his wife, Arvella, had four daughters, Sheila, Jeanne, Carol and Gretchen. Arvella Schuller died Feb. 11, 2014, after a brief illness.

Academic paper on plagiarism pulled because of plagiarism

An academic paper about combating plagiarism has been retracted because large portions of it were plagiarized.

Published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, the 2014 paper titled, "Development of a guideline to approach plagiarism in Indian scenario," hoped to define, detect, and prevent plagiarism, "at a grass root level."

Unfortunately for Dr. Thorakkal Shamim, the paper's author, the Indian Journal of Dermatology took his work very seriously and discovered that it was a copy of another doctor's dissertation which was titled, "Developing a comprehensive guideline for overcoming and preventing plagiarism at the international level based on expert opinion with the Delphi method," according to NPR.

As if the situation wasn't ironic enough, Dr. Shamim actually does know what he's talking about when it comes to plagiarism seeing as a group of Indian authors stole a paper he wrote in 2007 and passed it off as their own in 2010, according to RetractionWatch.com.

"The authors copied the entire text (introduction, case report, discussion, conclusion, photomicrograph [Figure 4], and direct immunofluorescence photograph) from the original article," Dr. Shamim said when the perpetrators were caught in 2012.

But that wasn't all because Dr. Shamim then prescribed a punishment for plagiarists:

The [plagiarized] article should be permanently retracted, and the author blacklisted and debarred for submitting an article to a particular journal for at least 5 years. The concerned head of the institution and head of the department of the author's institute have to be notified. Even though there are setbacks from the higher authorities, it is the prime duty of the author and the editor to take strong decisions to tackle plagiarism at the earliest to avoid unethical publishing.

Fantasy baseball draft guide: Overrated and underrated

Every year, there are fantasy players who reach for a player based on potential or one great season they had three years ago. And every year a good number of those people get stung by taking that player who was vastly overrated while there were plenty of underrated players available deeper in drafts who could provide the same, if not better, numbers at a much cheaper cost.

It's time for Roto Files' Second Annual Overrated/Underrated Team. Here's this year's roster:

First base

Overrated: Prince Fielder, Rangers — Nothing says durability like a 31-year-old guy coming off spinal fusion surgery.

Underrated: Adam LaRoche, White Sox — From 2005-14, LaRoche hit .263 while averaging 23 homers, 79 RBIs and a .811 OPS (these numbers would likely be higher if he had played more than 43 games in 2011). He's as consistent as you get.

Second base

Overrated: Dee Gordon, Marlins — A one-trick pony who has had one solid big-league season. Let's see him do it again, then we'll talk.

Underrated: Neil Walker, Pirates — Walker's numbers continue to get better. He is coming off a season when he hit .271 with 23 homers and 76 RBIs with a .809 OPS. He was a bargain with a 136.7 average draft position (ADP).

Third base

Overrated: Kris Bryant, Cubs — Yes, he hit .425 with nine homers and 15 RBIs this spring, raising his ADP to astronomical levels despite NEVER PLAYING A GAME IN THE BIGS. Roto Files believes Bryant will be a stud, but let the guy play one game before crowning him the next Mike Schmidt or something bigger.

Underrated: Chase Headley, Yankees — In 58 games with the Yankees last year, he hit .262 with six homers and 17 RBIs. A full season in Yankee Stadium will help bring back the guy who hit .286 with 31 homers and 115 RBIs in 2012.

Shortstop

Overrated: Ben Zobrist, Athletics — Zobrist could be eligible to play every position and he'd still be a 34-year-old with declining numbers moving to a pitcher-friendly park.

Underrated: Jhonny Peralta, Cardinals — Since 2005, he has averaged 146 games per season, 17 homers and 75 RBIs to go along with a .269 average. Will gladly take those numbers with his 201.7 ADP.

Catcher

Overrated: Salvador Perez, Royals — He plays a lot, we get it. That's why he hit .283 in the first half and .229 in the second half when you needed him most.

Underrated: Russell Martin, Blue Jays — He was solid offensively in 2014 (.290, 11 HR, 67 RBI) and moves to the Rogers Centre where offense is easy to come by.

Outfielder

Overrated: Bryce Harper, Nationals — Doesn't a player need to play a certain amount of games per season to qualify as the 11th best outfielder?

Underrated: Marlon Byrd, Reds — Over the last two years, Byrd has hit .277 with a .800 OPS while averaging 24 homers, 86 RBIs and 150 games per year. Yet, he had a 237.7 ADP. Keep overlooking him, and he'll keep producing.

Starting pitcher

Overrated: Adam Wainwright, Cardinals – Wainwright's 47.5 ADP comes with many concerns, including: declining strikeout rate, declining velocity, offseason elbow surgery on a pitching arm that already has logged a ton of miles and a spring ERA higher than 4.50. Hope he's not your ace.

Underrated: Jesse Hahn, A's — As a starter with the Padres last season, Hahn had a 2.96 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and a .199 opponents batting average while going 7-3. Now, he's Oakland's No. 2 starter.

Relief pitcher

Overrated: Trevor Rosenthal, Cardinals — If walks were a positive statistic, he'd be the best closer in the game.

Underrated: Joaquin Benoit, Padres — Benoit converted 11 of his 12 save opportunities last year en route to a 1.49 ERA and 0.77 WHIP. As long as the revamped Padres remain competitive, he will get save chances and you likely didn't have to pay too much for him at the draft (163.8 ADP).

Team name of the week: Big League Choo

57 places you’ve been mispronouncing all along

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 01 April 2015 | 23.16

It's bad enough looking like a tourist, but even worse when you open your mouth and totally butcher the name of the place.

And we're not just talking trip-up-your-tongue foreign destinations, either — plenty are right here in the good old US of A. But not to worry, we'll help spare you any such embarrassment with this primer to pronouncing places just like a local.

Now you'll fit in just swell . . . as long as you leave the white sneakers at home.

Photo: Shutterstock

Detroit, Mich.

Motor City, baby, is pronounced dih-TROYT, not DEE-troyt. And if you're heading to the upper peninsula for vacation, Mackinac Island is mack-eh-NAW not mack-in-ACK.

Photo: getty creative

Des Plaines, Ill.

This west Chicago suburb is pronounced as it's spelled: dess plainz. (Des Moines, day moyne, is next door in Iowa.) And the state is il-uh-NOY: An easy way to remember it, there's no noise in Illinois.

Photo: Shutterstock

Concord, N.H. vs. Concord, Mass.

Same spelling, two different pronunciations: The capital of New Hampshire is CON-chord. The historic town in neighboring Massachusetts is conk-ERD, like conquered — though if you really want to sound like a local, it's more like conk-AWD.

Worcester, Peabody, Scituate and Woburn — Mass.

Speaking of Massachusetts, the state seems to have cornered the market on oddly pronounced towns — so much so that there's even a website to help you out with the endless list.

Here are just a handful:

For Worcester, you have several options: woos-ter, woos-tah or wiss-tah. What's a no-no: war-chest-er or war-ses-ter.
Peabody: pee-buh-dee, not pee-body — and say it as fast and as close to a single syllable as you can.
Scituate: sit-choo-it
Quincy: quin-zee, not quin-see
Woburn: woo-bin, not woe-burn

Photo: Visit Norfolk

Norfolk, Va.

Home to the world's largest naval base, the city is pronounced NOR-fok or NAW-fok not nor-FOLK. And while we're talking Virginia cities, Staunton is STAN-tun and Gloucester is GLAW-ster.

Photo: Shutterstock

Nevada

It's ne-VAD-ah, not ne-VAH-duh. Yet another thing Brian Williams got wrong.

Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen in "Porlandia."Photo: Augusta Quirk/IFC

Oregon

Another state people always mispronounce. It's OR-eh-gun, not or-eh-GONE. If there's not a "Portlandia" skit about this yet, there should be.

Photo: Shutterstock

New Orleans, La.

OK, so there are as many ways to pronounce this city as there are women flashing themselves on Bourbon Street, but never ever refer to it as NAW-lins. Why? Because only tourists chugging Sazeracs in the French Quarter say it that way. Ditto New OR-lee-inz. Try: New or-LINZ or New or-LEENZ.

Photo: Handout

Kissimmee, Islamorada and Boca Raton — Florida

It's kih-SIM-ee, not KISS-eh-mee (cause you might get slapped for being too forward).

Down in the keys, it's EYE-la-more-ah-dah; though you may be tempted to pronounce it in a Spanish fashion, EESLA-more-ah-da, it's wrong.

And though the first half's easy — Boca — the second might trip you up: it's rah-TONE not rah-TUN.

Now go order the early bird special.

Photo: Handout

San Pedro, San Rafael, La Jolla — California

Some towns you gotta forget about the Spanish you learned: It's san PEE-dro not san pay-dro and san rah-FELL not san RAH-FA-el. Except when that Spanish would be helpful: La Jolla is la hoy-yah.

Photo: ROYALTY FREE STOCK

Boerne, Bowie, Buda and Burnet — Texas

Everything's bigger in Texas — and harder to pronounce, too. It's BER-nee, BOO-ee, BYOO-duh and BER-net. And those are just the B's! Check out the Texas Almanac's pronunciation guide for the rest.

Photo: Handout

Cartagena, Colombia

Do you see a tilde (~) over that "n" in Cartegena? No? That's right, so don't pronounce it like "mañana." It's simply kahr-tah-hey-NAH. And we're talking about the South American country here, not Columbia, SC, or the District of Columbia, which, if you'll note, is spelled — and thus pronounced — differently. Notice that second "o" in Colombia? That means it's co-LOM-bee-ah not co-LUM-bee-ah.

Photo: REUTERS/Oswaldo Rivas

Nicaragua

Nic-ah-ra-GOO-ah not nih-kuh-rah-GWUH. Don't be like the folks in this SNL skit. Ever.

Photo: getty creative

Now let's take a look at some of those tricky Caribbean islands . . .

Antigua: an-tee-GAH, not an-tee-gwah
Anguilla: an-gwil-ah (like vanilla) not an-gwee-lah
Curaçao: cur-ah-sow (ç makes an "ess" sound)
Nevis: nee-vis
St. Lucia: saint loo-shuh not loo-see-ah

Photo: ROYALTY FREE GETTY

Cappadocia, Turkey

Both acceptable: kap-ah-DOK-yah or kap-ah-doe-KEE-ah, but not kap-ah-doe-CHEE-ah.

Photo: ROYALTY FREE STOCK

Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns — Australia

It's mel-buhne, not mel-born; briz-bin not briss-bane; and though hotly debated, most pronounce Cairns cans or kenz (just don't drop an "r" in there).

Photo: ROYALTY FREE STOCK

Edinburgh, Scotland

Ed-in-burrah, not ed-in-bore-oh — or, God forbid, ed-in-burg.

Birmingham's favorite native son, Ozzy Osbourne.Photo: REUTERS/Danny Moloshok

Birmingham, Leicester, Berkshire — UK

It's bur-ming-EM (not bur-ming-HAM), less-ter not lee-sess-ter, and BARK-sure not berk-shy-er.

Photo: Shutterstock

Berlin, Germany

The German capital is pronounced bear-LIN or bear-LEEN.

Photo: getty creative

Capri, Italy

Don't say it like those silly, ankle-exposing pants. It's pronounced CAH-pree.

This is Cannes' version of a parking lot.Photo: ROYALTY FREE GETTY

Reims, Cannes, Aix, Cahors, Rennes — France

Ranse; cann or kenn (throw in an extra "n"); ex; kah-or; ren.

Photo: Shutterstock

Ljubljana, Slovenia

Home to green dragons, the Slovenian capital is Lyoo-BLEE-AH-nah.

Photo: EPA/STR

Qatar

Could be kuh-TAR; others say KUH-tar or cutter. "60 Minutes" even did a segment about it — which still doesn't clear it up.

Photo: Shutterstock

Maldives

Mawl-deevz or mol-deevz.

Iceland's most famous export, Björk.Photo: Splash News

Reykjavik, Iceland

REY-kyah-vik not RAKE-ah-vik.

Photo: REUTERS/Jeff Haynes

Wisconsin

We end with Wisconsin, because it's the only place that has a dedicated website — complete with audio — to help you pronounce the state's 190 cities, 400 villages, 1,260 towns and more — including all these tongue-tanglers: Kaukauna, Ashwaubenon, Mukwonago and Weyauwega.

Choupette Lagerfeld made more than $4 million in 2014

Choupette — the adorable blue-eyed Birman cat belonging to Karl Lagerfeld, who has two of her own maids and an Instagram account — netted more than $4 million for modeling gigs in 2014 (about the same as top model Cara Delevingne). Meanwhile, Dylan's Candy Bar and Havaianas team up for a candy-print sandal collection.

-The world's most famous cat, Choupette, brought home an impressive $4 million for just two modelings gigs in 2014 — a collaboration with cosmetics brand Shu Uemura and posing for a Vauxhall Corsa car calendar. "I don't allow her to do foodstuffs and things like this. She's too sophisticated for that," says Lagerfeld. "She is like a human being, but the good thing is that she's silent. You don't have to discuss it. She hates other animals and she hates children. She stays always with me and she has two personal maids. They play with her, they have to take care of her beautiful white hair, the beauty treatments for her eyes, and they entertain her. She is the center of the world . . . She's an inspiration for elegance." [The Cut]

-Dylan's Candy Bar — owned by Ralph Lauren's daughter Dylan — is teaming up with Havaianas for a collection of candy-print flip-flops that will be available starting Friday. Sweet! [Bustle]

-Chanel is finally joining the digital age — the French luxury brand will begin offering its products on an e-commerce site by the end of 2016. [Fashionista]

-Speaking of Chanel, Lily-Rose Depp made her red-carpet debut Tuesday night at the Chanel Paris-Salzburg show. The 15-year-old daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis (a former Lagerfeld muse) donned a pastel SS15 Chanel crop top with matching skirt. Keep an eye out for this ingenue. [Grazia]

-Is Zappos revolutionizing the fashion world? The shoe retailer is getting rid of traditional bosses and adopting a "holacracy" model — a structure that frees employees of job titles, traditional bosses and corporate hierarchy, instead promoting "self-organizing and self-managing business-centric circles." Juan Lagares, Mets agree to 4-year extension

PORT ST. LUCIE — Juan Lagares is a close to a new contract with the Mets that would keep him locked up through 2019, a baseball source confirmed Wednesday.

The deal will be a four-year extension on top of his 2015 contract, worth $23 million, according to Yahoo! Sports. The pact reportedly contains a club option for 2020 worth $9.5 million with a $500,000 buyout.

"If they do it I'm going to be happy," Lagares said. "I just want to keeping doing what I'm doing, play hard and win some games."

The new deal would buy out Lagares' arbitration-eligible years and take him through his first season of free agency.

Photo: AP

Lagares, 26, won a Gold Glove award in center field last season and is considered a building block for the Mets.

"I am thankful for the opportunity to be in this organization and for the team giving me the opportunity when I was 16 years old in the Dominican," Lagares said. "This is where I want to be."

As it stands, the club is continuing discussions with Lucas Duda about a contract extension that would buy out his arbitration years and at least one season of free agency. Duda indicated he wants any potential deal completed before Opening Day.

Guarantee that your honeymoon is a non-stop sex-fest

If you think your honeymoon is a guaranteed sex-fest, think again. "I've had couples who are disappointed with their honeymoon sex because they had very different expectations for the trip," says couples psychotherapist and sex therapist Sari Cooper. So, though it may not sound very sexy, the surest way to spice up your honeymoon is to plan it to be that way.

"While one person may want to spend most of their time catching up on sleep and touring — and maybe have sex one night — the other may want to have sex every night," explains Cooper. "It's important to compromise on your expectations so there aren't major resentments and arguing on your first trip out as a married couple."

Once you're on the same page, prepare for hot sex with a special packing list. "A couple could bring along an intro to Tantra book or movie, as well as sex toys they've never tried, and perhaps some outfits in order to play out a fantasy they've discussed before," says Cooper. If that's too wild for you, take it down a sexy notch with erotic lingerie, a skimpy bathing suit or "costumes that could inspire a scene playing with power."

Finally, make sure you enjoy the moment and stay on the same page as your new spouse. Kick off your marriage on the right foot by being open and honest about what you want out of your sex life — starting with the honeymoon.
