Although Shug McGaughey won back-to-back Breeders' Cup Miles with Lure in 1992-93, no one really thought of him as a top turf trainer until the past couple of years, especially this one. McGaughey's Point of Entry — coming off wins in the Man o'War, Sword Dancer and Joe Hirsch Turf Classic — is the favorite for this year's Breeders' Cup Turf and a top contender for Horse of the Year. And yesterday, Shug sent out Boisterous to win the Knickerbocker for the second straight year.
Favored at even-money in a field of seven going 1 ¹/‚ˆ miles over the inner turf course labeled "good," Boisterous settled in along the fence toward the back of the pack as Stormy Lord cut out the pace. Turning for home, Boisterous swung wide under Jose Lezcano, then came home like a locomotive to run right by them all, winning by two lengths in 1:50.26.
* The 5-year-old mare La Cloche hasn't done much in her career to remind you of either her dam, Memories of Silver, or her little sister, the recently retired Winter Memories, both of which rank among the top female grass runners in the annals of American racing. But La Cloche did a fairly good imitation of those two in the Grade 3, $150,000 Athenia at 1 1/16 miles over the inner turf. After saving ground under Junior Alvarado, she swung out at the top of the stretch while still last in the field of eight, then finished with a rush down the stretch to blow past 24-1 Embarr and draw clear, winning by 1 1/4 lengths.
"Thank God, maybe she can get out of her sister's shadow for a change," said Jimmy Toner, the trainer of all three fillies. "We're really happy for her."
FIFTH RACE: Yet another 2-year-old winner for Todd Pletcher. Delhomme, $440G purchase by WinStar Farm who ran second at 6-5 in his debut at Saratoga, drifted from 1-9 to 2-5 and quickly took the lead under Cornelio Velasquez, pressed by Long River, Irad Ortiz Jr. up. Delhomme edged clear down the backside, then Long River, a distance seventh first time out here Sept. 15, came after him again. Delhomme once again edged clear at the top of the stretch and held sway to the wire, the mile in a sharp 1:35.52, while Long River, in a much-improved performance, kept on gamely for second.
