Aaron Sorkin says he is struggling with how to reference the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the upcoming second season of "The Newsroom."
"That's a tough thing to write about without minimizing it or exploiting it or just spreading cheese wiz all over it," he admitted during a Q&A session at Sunday night's PaleyFest in Los Angeles.
"Obviously Newtown is something that was an important moment to all of us and the last thing you want to do is handle it poorly."
The HBO series, which received a Golden Globe nomination for Best TV Drama, goes behind the scenes of a fictional 24 hour cable news network, basing each episode's storyline around actual world events.

Season two -- which kicks off in June -- begins in the fall of 2011 and was scheduled to end just after the 2012 presidential election.
Sorkin, who has only written the first five episodes so far, agreed it would be almost impossible to not include what moderator Piers Morgan called "the seminal news event of the year."
"I am not a hundred percent sure," he said. "(But) I bet we do."
"You could stop before Sandy Hook. That is the only way you could do it. On the other hand, there are so many land mines to step on. You want to make sure you don't do a disservice to the story that is very important to all of us."
"So at the moment, I am sort of looking down the calendar at Sandy Hook and that is my fear there."
