Chris Canty is hoping to avoid a Hangover sequel, and that's not a knock on Bradley Cooper.

The former Giants defensive tackle, who signed with the Ravens this offseason, has already warned his new teammates about what he thinks undid Big Blue last season.

"I've talked to the guys about that. That Super Bowl hangover deal is real, I'll start by saying that," Canty told NJ.com Wednesday at the "ESPN The Magazine" pre-draft party.

The Giants Super Bowl defense last season fell apart in the second half when the team went from 6-2 to 9-7 and watched the Redskins take the NFC East. Now, Canty goes from last year's defending Super Bowl champ to this year's after the Ravens held off the 49ers in last season's championship game.

"I think everybody was enjoying basking in the glow of being Super Bowl champions, almost 3 million people on a parade through the Canyon of Heroes -- it was that kind of reality for us throughout the whole offseason last year," Canty said of how the Giants reacted last season after beating the Patriots 21-17 in Super Bowl XLVI.

"And I don't think guys approached putting our team back together and going through what we needed to go through in order to be able to compete for a championship in the 2012 season. And it worked against us."

The Giants did finish that regular season with the same 9-7 record that earned them the NFC East title in 2011 before running off four straight postseason wins. But the extreme lows (missing the playoffs three of the four past seasons) that have accompanied the highs (two Super Bowls) has been the criticism against coach Tom Coughlin.

The Giants playoff hopes were basically ended when they lost back-to-back games to the Falcons and Ravens in Weeks 15 and 16 by a combined 67-14.

"You saw it late in the season: Teams were outplaying us, they were fundamentally more sound than us, they were better technique-wise than us, and we were out-played, plain and simple," Canty told the website.

"So those are some of the lessons that I'm trying to instill in some of the guys, some of the younger guys, now, so they understand, 'Listen, you just can't show up and win a championship.' You have to go through the process."
