Five people, including three firefighters, were hurt in a candle fire in a Central Park South hi-rise this morning, officials said.
Efforts to get the Upper West Side blaze under control were delayed by more than five minutes because the fire hydrant closest to the 18-story building wasn't working, a source said.
"We had to use the fire hydrant on the corner," a source told The Post. "We had to drag five lines, 50 feet each. Someone from the building came out and helped."
The blaze allegedly began because a pair in a 14th floor studio apartment were using candles, an FDNY chief said.
"It appears there was carelessness with candles," FDNY Dep. Chief Thomas McKavanagh said.
The 72-year-old man and 64-year-old woman suffered smoke inhalation, and burns, after they tried to put the blaze out themselves, according to the FDNY. The two were taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center, while the firefighters suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
It took nearly an hour for 100 firefighters to knock down the flames on the 14th floor, which had filled with smoke because the two victims left the apartment door open when they fled.
The apartment was engulfed in flames when firefighters, struggling to get water to the scene, arrived.
"The apartment door was held closed until we got a positive water source. The stairs were filled with smoke," McKavanagh said.
The 14th floor residents got out on their own, but the rest of the building did not need to be evacuated, the chief said.
