Eliot Spitzer choked up today when asked how he's personally changed since getting caught in a hooker scandal that sunk his governorship five years ago.
"A lot of pain. A lot of pain," Spitzer said, fighting back tears during a grilling on MSNBC's Morning Joe program.
"Hubris is terminal -- to me particularly," Spitzer, in discussing his personal failings. "A consequence of hubris is self indulgence . . . It's inexplicable," he said.
He claimed his political comeback bid -- running for city comptroller -- is "tougher" because you have to "look your family in the eye."
Still Spitzer sought to separate the "personal from the substantive" in defending his second act.

He grappled to explain what disqualifies someone from running for public office, understanding that he broke the law by cavorting with high-price hookers.
"People lying about their about taxes. That's disqualifying," he said. "I was lying about personal, sexual activity."
That's not disqualifying? "I will leave that to the public to make that determination," Spitzer said.
