Randy Travis remains in critical condition after receiving an implant to help blood flow to his heart.
The 54-year-old country singer was admitted to an unidentified medical facility Sunday after complications related to his "recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy," spokesman Kirt Webster said in a written statement.
Webster denied reports the Grammy winner had heart surgery. "Travis underwent the placement of an Impella peripheral left ventricular assist device for stabilization prior to transferring hospitals."
TMZ notes that the device – the size of a coffee stirrer and smaller in diameter than a pencil – is known as the world's smallest heart pump. A doctor inserts the pump into an artery in the arm, groin or neck and sends it to the heart.

According to the Mayo Clinic Web site, the Impella device is "an implantable mechanical pump that helps pump blood from the lower chambers of your heart to the rest of your body."
Travis' hospitalization is the latest in a series of tough developments for the singer, after a handful of recent high-profile appearances, including a performance during the Country Music Association Festival's nightly concert series.
He pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in January following his arrest last year when he was found naked after crashing his Pontiac Trans Am.
Travis was sentenced to two years of probation, fined $2,000 and given a 180-day suspended jail sentence. He was required to spend at least 30 days at an alcohol treatment facility and complete 100 hours of community service.
