Mets' Feliciano says ‘hope’ kept him afloat in 3-year absence

Four outs may not seem like much. But when they come in back-to-back games, the first games for Pedro Feliciano since Oct. 2, 2010, then four outs are huge.

"It's a great positive," manager Terry Collins said. "The one thing obviously that was very good to see was the command of his stuff a second day."

Feliciano pitched a perfect eighth in the Mets' 4-3, 12-inning loss to the Royals yesterday after getting one out in Friday's win.

It had been one setback after another for the lefty reliever, who underwent two shoulder surgeries. What kept him going?

"Hope," he said. "It's like Mariano [Rivera] said when he got the ACL, 'I'm not going to retire until I get back.' I'm not going to retire until I get back."

* Feliciano was part of a bullpen corps including Gonzalez Germen, Scott Atchison and Scott Rice that retired 15 straight. David Aardsma ended the magic when he surrendered Justin Maxwell's homer, the only hit allowed by the bullpen in six innings.

Aardsma — and Collins — blamed falling behind in the count 3-0.

"That's what it really comes down to," said Aardsma, who blew a save Friday. "You fall behind 3-0, make three bad pitches right out of the gate, then you have to come back. I made two good strikes after that, then the next one he got."

* The Mets did not walk a batter, the first time in franchise history there were no walks in a game of at least 12 innings. ... Jeremy Hefner became the third NL pitcher to surrender 20 homers this season. ... The Mets were again without closer Bobby Parnell (neck). ... Collins will stay with a five-man rotation until Jon Niese returns. Niese's target date in Aug. 11. He threw a bullpen session yesterday and is scheduled to rehab with Double-A Binghamton on Tuesday. ... Kelvin Herrera (4-5) got win for the Royals with three hitless innings. Greg Holland notched his 29th save.

* Mets announced a four-day "No Fees" promotion during which the team will waive any service fees for tickets to 2013 games purchased from 9 a.m. Monday to 5 p.m. Thursday either at Mets.com/nofees or by phone (718-507-TIXX).

* Mike Baxter arrived after taking 6 a.m. flight from Nashville, where the Mets' Triple-A Las Vegas affiliate was playing. He took David Wright's roster spot after Wright went on the DL.

"I'm definitely excited to be back," said Baxter, who hit .212 in 41 games before he was sent down on June 10, then flied out as a pinch-hitter yesterday. "Any time you're sent down, you're always hoping you get a chance to come back. ... I really wish it wasn't on these terms."
