John Lackey will start against the Yankees on Saturday, but doesn't think Alex Rodriguez should be batting against him.
Lackey teed off on the Yankees slugger and wondered how he is able to play with a 211-game suspension hanging over him for alleged PED use stemming from his ties to Biogenesis.
"I've got a problem with it. You bet I do," Lackey told the Boston Globe on Thursday.
"How is he still playing? He obviously did something and he's playing. I'm not sure that's right . . . It's pretty evident he's been doing stuff for a lot of years I've been facing him."
Lackey joins Rays star Evan Longoria as players who have spoken out on Rodriguez's availability. The Yankees are 5-5 since his return to the lineup as they try and fight their way back into the wild-card and AL East races.
Lackey's frustration with Rodriguez dates back to 2002 when the then Rangers star homered off the right-hander in his major-league debut for the Angels.
"He took me deep the first time I faced him as a rookie, and he admitted to doing stuff back then. There are a lot of things I want back from him," Lackey said.
Lackey will get a chance to go up against Rodriguez this weekend as the rivals have a crucial three-game series in Fenway Park.
"I think I know what kind of reception he's going to get at Fenway," Lackey said.
