Long Islanders faced a difficult commute into New York City this morning after problems with the third rail in one of Amtrack's East River tunnels.

An train heading from Huntington towards Penn Station became disabled at approximately 7:15 a.m. after the third rail lost power, according to an MTA spokesman.

An LIRR rescue engine towed it to Hunterspoint Avenue, and it reached the station at about 8:55 a.m.

There are four tunnels under the East River, and about 15 trains were canceled after one was closed. Riders heading to Penn Station face delays of 60 minutes, and delays are thirty minutes for those heading east, according to the spokesman.

Customers heading to Manhattan can get a free transfer at Jamaica to the E train, and to the 7 train at Hunterspoint.
