New Brooklyn DA set to remake staff

It'll be Extreme Makeover: Brooklyn DA edition now that Ken Thompson is poised to take over from Charles Hynes as the borough's top lawman.  Thompson, 47, will need to replace numerous top Hynes staffers who plan to resign before the January 1 transfer of power, sources told The Post.

And he plans to make at least one of his top hires a controversial former prosecutor fired by Hynes, two sources close to Thompson said.

Ama Dwimoh, 49, ran the crimes against children bureau in 2010 when she was canned for allegedly threatening interns.

"The thought of him bringing Ama Dwimoh in to run things is just too much," said a current Brooklyn assistant district attorney.

Dwimoh was one of the first to encourage Thompson to run against Hynes, said a second prosecutor.

"She had little patience for people who didn't work as hard as she did. Perhaps she was harsher than she should have been in certain instances, but she deserved better from Hynes," said the second ADA.

It's not clear what position he'll offer her. Two other Hynes castoffs who were active in the Thompson campaign and may return in the new regime are former gang bureau chief Deanna Rodriguez, who was dismissed for racist and homophobic outbursts, and ex- homicide prosecutor Rupert Barry, who got the pink slip for poor evaluations.

"He's been advising Ken, giving him advice on strategy," a source close to Thompson said of Barry, adding that Rodriguez appeared at multiple Thompson campaign events.

The majority of the Hynes senior staff are expected to bow out rather than wait for the axe.

"Twenty senior executives will resign before they are asked to leave," said one staffer.

"They'll resign effective December 31," said another source close to Hynes.

Thompson plans to purge all Hynes executive staff who remain past New Year's Eve, plus prosecutors who live outside the state, said a source close to Thompson.

Controversial rackets chief Michael Vecchione will resign before Thompson has a chance to fire him, said the Hynes staffer.

Hynes might have won the Democratic primary if he had jettisoned Vecchione, whose record was tainted by wrongful convictions, two ADAs said.

"Among the people with their heads on the chopping block, there is immeasurable rage against Michael Vecchione," said one.

Although Hynes will remain on the general election ballot with the GOP and Conservative lines, he's has said he will not campaign. Mid- and lower-level prosecutors question what the office will look like in 2014.

"A lot of us are trying to figure out if we need an escape plan," said a third Brooklyn ADA.

Some prosecutors are critical of Thompson and plan to seek work elsewhere – even in a lean legal job market.

"I'm very concerned about Thompson's integrity. He handled himself shamefully with Diallo. I won't work for him," said the first ADA, referring to Thompson's representation of the African immigrant who accused former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexual assault.

Other prosecutors welcomed the change Thompson will bring if, as expected, he sweeps out the 24-year-incumbent Hynes.

"There are many aspects of the office that are in complete disarray and we need a new set of eyes to exam them," said another ADA.
