Australian model defies industry’s idea of weight

So you think you know models.

They're tall, beautiful, super skinny and totally untouchable, right?

Robyn Lawley is a couple of those things. But she doesn't seem very interested in the others.

She's a stunner, for sure. And at 6'2″, she's got the height.

But the Australian beauty embraces her fuller figure. And the fashion industry is embracing her right back.

Lawley, 24, shines in the November issue of GQ Australia, which is devoted to things that will make you feel good.

She tells the magazine: "I've got big hips and a big body. I'm double, triple the size of other models – and I embrace that, I own it."

Refreshing, huh?

Lawley is a size 16 and reportedly weighs 178 lbs.

GQ editor Ceri David says she would like to see more fuller figured women on catwalks and in fashion bibles. And she's proud to be at the vanguard of the movement.

"Most models are a particular shape and size and that's the shape and size that runway clothes are designed for, and to be honest, they look brilliant on the runway," she says.

"But there's room for everyone."

Lawley has a couple of Vogue covers under her plus-size belt, including a landmark issue of Vogue Italia that featured fuller-figured models for the first time.

And Ceri David insists Lawley's beauty runs deep.

"Our fashion director said she's the best model he's worked with," David says, referring to Wayne Gross, who has styled top models in all the world's fashion capitals.

"He said she's such a good model, she really knows how to move in front of the camera and she's a true professional."

David reckons Lawley was a natural fit for the magazine. GQ has a wandering eye, no question, but it doesn't have a narrow taste in beauty.

"One of the things about being a gentleman is embracing everyone," she explains about her readers.

"So that can mean someone like Robyn Lawley or Kate Moss or Rebel Wilson who is an amazing person and hugely successful. I think that's what we stand for."

GQ Australia's November issue is on newsstands now.
