Garden State Gov. Chris Christie has thrown in the towel on his fight against same-sex marriage laws.
Christie withdrew his appeal of a September court ruling green-lighting gay marriage laws — saying a Friday state Supreme Court ruling left "no ambiguity" that gay couples should be allowed to wed in the state.
Christie's announcement on Monday came just hours after jubilant same-sex New Jersey couples, some of whom lined up at courthouses as early as midnight, began getting hitched Monday.
The wedding celebrations came after the high court refused on Friday to delay the nuptials while it mulled Christie's September appeal.
The governor -– who is likely to make a run for the White House in 2016 -– has long maintained that the issue of same-sex marriage should be put to a ballot vote and as a result filed an appeal of a September 27 lower court ruling for New Jersey to start recognizing gay marriage.
"Chief Justice Rabner left no ambiguity about the unanimous court's view on the ultimate decision in this matter when he wrote, 'same-sex couples who cannot marry are not treated equally under the law today,'" Christie spokesman Colin Reed said.
"Although the Governor strongly disagrees with the Court substituting its judgment for the constitutional process of the elected branches or a vote of the people, the Court has now spoken clearly as to their view of the New Jersey Constitution and, therefore, same-sex marriage is the law.
"The Governor will do his constitutional duty and ensure his Administration enforces the law as dictated by the New Jersey Supreme Court."
