St. John’s picked 5th in Big East; Jordan top rookie

St. John's was selected fifth in the new Big East preseason rankings, but four Red Storm players — the most of any team — were part of the all-conference honors released Wednesday, perhaps a sign of how coaches in the league feel about the program's potential.

Marquette headed up the poll, followed by Georgetown, newcomer Creighton, Villanova and St. John's to round out the top five. Providence, seen as a program brimming with potential, is sixth, Xavier seventh, Seton Hall eighth, Butler ninth and DePaul 10th.

St. John's freshman Rysheed Jordan, the talk of Red Storm media day last week despite head coach Steve Lavin keeping him from meeting the press, was named preseason Rookie of the Year. St. John's had the Rookie of the Year each of the past two seasons — Maurice Harkless in 2011-12, JaKarr Sampson in 2012-13 — though neither player was honored in the preseason.

Creighton forward Doug McDermott, who surprised some by passing up the NBA to return for his senior year, was named preseason Player of the Year.

St. John's junior guard D'Angelo Harrison made the first team, along with Providence guard Bryce Cotton, Georgetown's Markel Starks, Marquette forward Davante Gardner and Xavier guard Semaj Christon. Sampson and Seton Hall senior forward Fuquan Edwin were part of the second team.

They are joined on the second team by Villanova duo Jayvaughn Pinkston, a Brooklyn product, and Ryan Arcidiacono, Marquette forward Jamil Wilson and DePaul forward Melvin Cleveland. St. John's center Chris Obekpa, who led the nation in blocked shots last season, and Providence forward Kadeem Batts received honorable mention.
