Off-duty cop nearly pummeled to death in bar brawl

An off-duty police officer was nearly beaten to death during an early morning brawl in Queens, law enforcement sources said.

The cop and another man got into a fist fight on Liberty Avenue near Lefferts Boulevard in South Richmond Hill at around 5:30 a.m., sources said.  The suspect allegedly knocked the cop to the ground and started pummeling him.

It is unclear why the men were fighting but sources said alcohol may have been a factor.

The injured officer was rushed to Jamaica Hospital in critical but stable condition and the assailant was arrested at the scene, sources said.  He is being questioned by police and charges against him are still pending.
