France's horndog president is causing a huge headache for White House officials trying to figure out which of his gal pals he'll escort to a formal Feb. 11 state dinner.
President François Hollande confessed Tuesday that he'll need a month to decide his main squeeze, longtime partner Valérie Trierweiler or sexy French actress Julie Gayet, whom he's been seeing on the side.
"Everyone, in their personal lives, can face struggles," Hollande whined, as Trierweiler remained hospitalized in shock over his dalliances with Gayet. "That's our case. These are painful times."
Hollande's dilemma "has set tongues wagging around Washington," The Hill reported.
"Quel dommage," joked Rep. Gerald Connolly (D-Va.), a member of the House Foreign Affairs panel and longtime Francophile. "What a problem to have."
But jokes aside, the developments pose problems for the White House, which officially invited "President Hollande and Valérie Trierweiler" to the dinner.
The White House referred questions to the French government.
"There are no changes," spokesman Jay Carney said. "The president looks forward to seeing President Hollande for the state visit in February. On issues of the delegation that the French come with, I would refer you to the French government."
But the French embassy in Washington said it had no clue who would be on Hollande's arm for the DC shindig.
"We don't know that because it's still quite a few weeks away," an embassy spokeswoman told The Hill. "We'll see if there's a change when the president decides to talk about the subject."
Connolly said that only two decades ago it would have been unthinkable for any world leader to escort someone other than his or her spouse to a formal White House event.
But "that's not true anymore," he said, as mores and morals have changed over the years.
