De Blasio: Charter school funding has ‘strong private sector element’

Mayor de Blasio emphasized that there is a "a strong private sector element" in the funding of charter schools — even though the bulk of the school funding comes from the public.

Speaking on the Hot 97 radio show Thursday, Hizzoner agreed with host Ebro Darden that "a lot" of charter schools are funded by big business.

"Oh yeah. A lot of them are funded by very wealthy Wall Street folks and others – that doesn't mean the schools don't do good work – but absolutely, there's a very strong private sector element here," de Blasio said.

When Darden and co-host Peter Rosenberg suggested the "campaign" to portray the mayor as anti-charter was also funded by big business, de Blasio didn't disagree.

"I think you're providing a keen political analysis here," he said.

The mayor's statements come just days after as many as 11,000 charter school families rallied in Albany with Gov. Cuomo in response to a series of moves by city officials that hurt charter schools.

De Blasio cut more than $200 million in facility funding for charters from the capital budget – their entire allotment – and displaced three Success Academy charter schools that were set to share space in public school buildings come September.

Ironically, the mayor recently appointed his wife as chair of a prominent organization that's built on private-public funding partnerships – The Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City.

When the Hot 97 hosts asked de Blasio about Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina's statement that charter schools are "on their own" when it comes to finding space, Hizzoner claimed her words were mischaracterized.

"I've gotten used to the fact that a lot of the headlines don't reflect what we actually said," the mayor said. "I think what she was trying to say is that some of the charter organizations do have space in their existing schools to accommodate some of the kids that they want to put into a different location… so I'm just not gonna buy into the hype that tries to misrepresent what happened."

Farina's comments this week came in response to questions about options for students at Success Academy Middle School – which is being booted from its public school building in Harlem this summer.

"They're charter schools. They're on their own now. That is part of what they do, and that's an independent structure, and that is how they function," she said.
