DALLAS — Here are three thoughts on the Nets' 107-104 overtime win over the Mavericks on Sunday night:
1. After the Nets struggled to secure a couple of rebounds late in regulation, coach Jason Kidd resorted to an unusual strategy, going with a small lineup of Deron Williams, Shaun Livingston, Alan Anderson, Joe Johnson and Paul Pierce against a Mavericks team featuring a pair of 7-footers in Dirk Nowitzki and Samuel Dalembert.
The move worked, as Joe Johnson corralled the rebound of Nowitzki's miss, brought the ball upcourt and then scored the game-tying basket. The Nets kept that same lineup in the final seconds of regulation, forcing a Monta Ellis miss that sent the game to overtime.
"We felt Paul can play the 5, and why not?" Kidd said with a smile afterwards. "We've put him at the 4, so we tried him out at the 5. It's something we've talked about doing, but we all have to come in and rebound and we had Paul and our switching group in there, so that helped us get some stops."
2. Sunday's game illustrated A Tale of Two Road Games for the Nets. The first was Saturday, March 15, when the Nets were in Washington to face the Wizards. The Nets led comfortably for much of the game before they fell apart in the fourth quarter, getting outscored 29-15 by the Wizards and allowing the lead to slip away in the final minutes.
Then there was Sunday's game against the Mavericks. The Nets trailed by double digits at separate points in the first and second halves, only to hang around and then, thanks to a surge late in regulation, get it to overtime before pulling away for a surprising win.
Beyond it being another sign of how things have changed over the past few months for the Nets, it also was an example of the fact that over the course of 82 games, these situations even themselves out. For every game like the Wizards loss, there's usually another game like Sunday's a team will wind up stealing when it really didn't deserve to win.
3. If the Nets come back and win the Atlantic Division title, Sunday's game will be looked back on as a potential turning point in the race.
Earlier Sunday, Toronto entered the fourth quarter trailing the Hawks by 11 points at home, before outscoring the Hawks 36-15 in the final quarter to come away with a big win. If the Nets had lost, it would have left them 2.5 games back of Toronto – including two in the loss column – with 14 games to play.
Given that Toronto is in possession of all the tiebreaker scenarios (because of better division and conference records) and have a remaining schedule that features only three games against teams with winning records, it would have been extremely difficult for the Nets to win the division barring a collapse on the Raptors' part.
