Phil Jackson officially was announced as Knicks president on Tuesday, pledging to restore a winning luster to the franchise where he got his start.
With "Welcome Home, Phil" banners festooning Madison Square Garden for the introductory press conference, Jackson invoked his Knicks title teams of the 1970s and began to outline his vision of installing the principles of "team" basketball with the adrift franchise.
"This is the best place to play basketball," Jackson said. "We want to build a team. There are things I believe players should have. … I believe in system basketball."
Jackson, who has a five-year contract, said he would meet with the Knicks before Wednesday's home game against the Pacers and already had offered his support to coach Mike Woodson, though Jackson stopped short of endorsing Woodson as the coach for next season.
On Carmelo Anthony, who can opt out of his contract and become a free agent following this season, Jackson said: "I have no problem saying Carmelo Anthony is part of our future plans." Jackson added he believed Anthony — whom he pointedly called one of the NBA's top "scorers" — could take his game to "another level."
The coaching legend and first-time executive said he had been assured autonomy in basketball decisions, with owner James Dolan saying he "willingly and gratefully" would cede control to Jackson.
"This is someone who knows about winning," Dolan said. "Regardless of our record, when you have a chance to get Phil to run your team, you do it. Plain and simple."
Dolan described a months-long courtship of Jackson, brokered by music industry player Irving Azoff, that began before Christmas. It began with a feeler of Jackson returning to the bench and quickly segued to discussions of a front-office role. Steve Mills will remain in his role as general manager, and both Jackson and Mills are to report directly to Dolan.
Jackson offered he would be accessible with the media in his new role, but "closed walls" would remain.
"I'll try to monitor my blabbermouth," Jackson said.
