After missing the Mets' first two games for the birth of his son on Monday, Daniel Murphy rejoined the team Thursday and took his customary spot at second base and at No. 2 in the order.
He called the experience humbling and took the high road about criticism he received for taking a second day of paternity leave and missing Wednesday's game.
Manager Terry Collins had no need for such restraint, taking critics — such as radio host Mike Francesa — to task.
"Unfairly [criticized],'' Collins said before the game against the Nationals. "First of all, if you're accusing Daniel Murphy of not wanting to play — this guy played 161 games last year, wore himself out played through all sorts of discomfort. The man had his first child, he's allowed to be there. The rules state that he can be there, so he went.
"There's nothing against it, there's nothing wrong with it. He missed two games. It's not like he's missed 10. When you start attacking Daniel Murphy's credibility, you need to look in the mirror a little bit.''
Murphy had career highs in games played (161), at-bats (658), runs (92) and hits (188) last season. Collins said that should be proof of his dedication.
"You're attacking a guy's integrity, and Daniel Murphy is one of the best baseball players in that locker room,'' Collins said. "He is an old-school player. This guy, again, it's his first child. As we saw, he came north. He had no idea when the baby was gonna come. And when it happens, we made arrangements.
"By all means, with the PDC, you go. I'm sure there might be some guy along the way that said, 'Listen, it's too far to go, it's too far to travel, I'll see you in a few days.' But you know what, I certainly feel its very unfair to criticize Daniel Murphy.''
Murphy didn't want to delve into the controversy.
"I got a couple text messages about it, so I'm not going to sit here and lie and say I didn't hear about it,'' Murphy said. "You know, that's the awesome part about being blessed by being a parent, is you get that choice. My wife and I discussed it and we felt the best thing for our family was for me to stay for an extra day, that being Wednesday, due to the fact that she can't travel for two weeks.
"It's going to be tough for her to get up to New York for a month, so just to have that support system with her. I can only speak from experience – my experience – but fathers seeing their wives, she was completely finished. She was done. She'd had surgery, she was wiped. So having me there helped a lot and vice versa, to take some of the load off. Also knowing in the future that I'm coming back to work.''
Nationals right-hander Jordan Zimmermann was scratched due to flu-like symptoms. Tanner Roark will get the ball, making his sixth career start.
