The Giants continued their remarkable free-agency blitz Wednesday, adding former Broncos defensive end Robert Ayers.
Ayers was a first-round pick in 2009 by Denver and had a career-high 5 1/2 sacks last season. He is the 13th veteran who played for another team last season to join the Giants since free agency began March 11.
The 6-foot-3, 274-pound Ayers has also played outside linebacker in his career and will help the Giants make up for the recent free-agency loss of Justin Tuck to the Raiders along their defensive front.
Ayers is the second free agent signed in as many days by Big Blue, who added former Saints offensive tackle Charles Brown on Tuesday. The two signings came despite co-owner John Mara's claim last week that the Giants were "pretty much done" with signing free agents.
Ayers, 28, also is the second prominent Broncos defender to join the Giants this offseason, along with cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.
Ayers — who spent part of his youth in Jersey City — never lived up to his first-round pedigree, but had his moments in Denver, including a sack of Tom Brady in the AFC Championship Game earlier this year.
