Hal: Why Yankees still don’t need to sign Stephen Drew

Stephen Drew isn't coming through that Yankee Stadium door. At least, not yet, Hal Steinbrenner made clear on Tuesday morning.

At a "Diversity Business Summit" co-sponsored by the Yankees and Major League Baseball, Steinbrenner, the Yankees' managing general partner, said he didn't see the need to sign Drew, the free-agent infielder, to bolster his banged-up unit.

"I'm pretty content with our infield right now," Steinbrenner told reporters, after participating in a panel discussion. "I think guys like [Dean] Anna and [Yangervis] Solarte have been pleasant surprises. Kelly Johnson has been good. Derek [Jeter] is healthy. So so far, so good. But it's early."

Asked expressly whether he was ruling out an acquisition of Drew, Steinbrenner responded, "So far, I'm pretty content with where we are, but I will always analyze options. That's my job. Throughout the course of the whole year."

Jeter missed two games against the Red Sox due to a tight right quadriceps, and profoundly injury-prone second baseman Brian Roberts sat out Sunday night's game with an ailing back.

Steinbrenner expressed satisfaction with his most expensive purchase of the Yankees' offseason spending spree, rookie right-hander Masahiro Tanaka, who was set to make his third start Tuesday night against the Cubs before rain washed out the game.

"Very, very impressed, as I think everybody was, with his poise," Steinbrenner said. "Which probably shouldn't be a surprise. You can say what you want about Japanese baseball, but pressure is pressure. And that was no different over there than it is here. It's every bit as intense.

"I think he proved that he can falter at first and then recover. It's a tough thing, but it's a very good trait to see."

Major League Baseball Advanced Media president and CEO Bob Bowman, Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts and Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg joined Steinbrenner on stage to discuss a range of issues, including the expanded instant replay system. Steinbrenner's Yankees benefited against the Red Sox over the weekend when MLB officials twice made head-scratching decisions on manager's challenges.

"I don't expect any system to be perfect," Steinbrenner said. "It's no different than before instant replay. You're going to get calls that go your way, and you're probably going to get some that don't. No system is perfect, but it's a vast improvement over what we had. And I think it's going to be great."
