ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Yankees right-hander Ivan Nova has been diagnosed with a serious elbow injury, the Yankees announced Sunday morning, putting him in jeopardy of requiring season-ending surgery.
Nova, who left Saturday night's 16-1 Yankees loss to Tampa Bay in the fifth inning when he complained of elbow discomfort, has a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament of his right elbow. Earlier this month, Mets closer Bobby Parnell suffered a similar injury and opted to undergo Tommy John surgery less than a week later.
The recovery time for Tommy John surgery is typically 12-to-18 months. Nova, who said he wasn't yet certain whether he would go immediately for the operation or try rehabilitating the elbow first, will be examined Monday in New York by Yankees team physician Christopher Ahmad. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list.
"It's hard," Nova said Sunday morning at Tropicana Field, where the Yankees were set to complete their four-game series with the Rays. "I don't even know what to tell you guys, I'm so sad right now I'm not going to be pitching. It hurts.
"But God is real big. I know he's not going to forget me. I'm going to keep working hard to get back as soon as possible."
Nova said that he hadn't felt anything all season until the final pitch he threw Saturday, a curveball that Tampa Bay's Matt Joyce ripped for a double.
When he shook his arm upon throwing that pitch, Yankees bench coach Tony Pena alerted manager Joe Girardi, and Nova left the game moments later.
"I just felt a little pop in my arm," Nova said Sunday.
In other Yankees roster moves Sunday, first baseman Mark Teixeira was activated from the disabled list, and righties Preston Claiborne and Bryan Mitchell were recalled from Triple-A and Double-A, respectively. Scott Sizemore was optioned back to Triple-A, and reliever Matt Daley was designated for assignment.
