Prosecution questions ‘expert’ witness’ integrity in Pistorius trial

The prosecutor in Oscar Pistorius' murder trial launched a blistering attack Wednesday on a expert witness for the defense.

Roger Dixon, a former cop, told the court he had conducted sound and visibility tests that contradicted earlier testimony from neighbors, who had said they heard a woman screaming and then gunshots the morning Reeva Steenkamp was killed.

"Take it from me, I'm testing your integrity," said Gerrie Nel, who at one point mocked Dixon for saying that none of the four bullets Pistorius fired missed Steenkamp – contradicting state experts who said she was struck by three of the four.

"You see how irresponsible it is to make inferences in areas where you're not an expert?" Nel said.

Dixon, now a forensic geologist at the University of Pretoria, contradicted some evidence given by a police ballistics expert and the state pathologist who examined Steenkamp's body.

But under questioning from prosecutor Gerrie Nel, Dixon admitted he did not have expertise in some of the areas in which he was testifying, including sound, light and ballistics.

Nel subjected Dixon to the same grueling scrutiny with which he challenged Pistorius, who often fumbled for answers while in the witness box over five days.

Defense lawyer Barry Roux was using Dixon's testimony to try to cast doubt on the prosecution's version that Steenkamp fled to the bathroom and was hiding in the toilet during a fight with Pistorius in the pre-dawn hours of Valentine's Day 2013.

Nel has said that the double-amputee athlete shot Steenkamp through the door as she faced him and while they were arguing.

Pistorius, 27, is charged with premeditated murder and faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted on the charge. He claims he shot the 29-year-old model by mistake thinking she was a dangerous intruder in the toilet about to come out and attack him.

Also Wednesday, Judge Thokozile Masipa, who will give the final judgment in the case because South Africa doesn't have a jury system, ruled that proceedings will adjourn for more than two weeks after Thursday and resume again on May 5.
