Canadiens goalie Carey Price out for series

BROSSARD, Quebec — The pain on Michel Therrien's face was obvious, as was the anger in his voice.

The Canadiens coach had to declare Monday morning that his starting goalie, Carey Price, will be out for the remainder of the Eastern Conference final against the Rangers with an apparent right leg injury. The series resumes with Game 2 on Monday night at the Bell Centre, the Rangers having won Game 1, 7-2, on Saturday afternoon.

"Really disappointed," Therrien said. "Obviously, he's our best player."

What got Therrien a bit hot was the way the injury happened. Rangers speedy power forward Chris Kreider went to the net on a breakaway and slammed into Price's leg. It was 3:15 into the second period, with the Rangers holding a 2-0 lead. Price remained in the game for the rest of the period, but started the third on the bench in favor of backup Peter Budaj, the Rangers already up, 4-1.

"Looking at the incident, it's a reckless play," Therrien said. "That's the truth. Kreider, this is not the first time he is going at goalies. We end up losing our best player, but our group, we've faced a lot adversity through the course of the season, and we'll respond and get the attitude to respond really well. And this is what I'm expecting, starting tonight."

Therrien said that playing Price the rest of the second period did not make the injury worse, and said there is a possibility Price could be ready if the Canadiens make it to the Stanley Cup final.

The coach did not announce whether he would start Budaj or Dustin Tokarski in net, though he said he had made up his mind.

"I know we have a lot of character," he said. "That's the No. 1 reason we are here."
