NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton's community policing initiative is being put to the test in Manhattan.
David Ehrenberg, Commanding Officer of the 13th Precinct in Gramercy Park, urged business owners to work closely with the police department to combat crime in the neighborhood during a speech Tuesday morning at a TD Bank on Park Avenue South.
"Getting everybody involved is very important," Ehrenberg said. Collaborative policing is essential."
Overall crime in the 13th Precinct – which covers the Flatiron District, Gramercy Park and Union Square — is down nearly three percent this year compared with 2013, according to police statistics through May 11.
There have been 729 felony crimes in 2014 as opposed to 751 last year, the statistics show.
But Ehrenberg admits that commercial and residential burglaries are a thorn in his side and now he wants to "put burglars out of business" with the help of the community.
He laid out a plan to drive down the 32 percent spike in burglaries this year compared with 2013.
The preventative measures include:
- Reducing the time available for burglar to enter the premises by locking your doors and windows.
- Increasing the time burglars need to gain entry by installing adequate lights, locks and alarms – all of which act as a deterrent.
- Making sure your windows offer light and ventilation, but not easy access.
- Keeping safes anchored to the floor with a minimal amount of money in them.
After Ehrenberg's speech, Captain Steven Hellman spoke briefly about enforcing Mayor de Blasio's "Vision Zero" program to prevent traffic deaths.
