Stephen Strasburg. Matt Harvey. Jose Fernandez. The hit list of brilliant and young pitchers claimed by serious arm injuries seems to lengthen by the week.
The plague of blown elbows and frayed shoulders in the big league ranks has led many to wonder whether the problems originate when pitchers are amateurs, throwing too often and too hard for developing anatomy to withstand.
Now Jerry Striegel, coach of Rochester High School in Washington, is under fire after he allowed starting pitcher Dylan Fosnacht to throw 194 pitches over 14 innings in a district tournament game on Tuesday.
Striegel reportedly told the Centralia Chronicle he checked on Fosnacht every inning.
"We talked to him every inning, and he said he felt comfortable, he felt good, and he's a little competitor," Striegel said. "He didn't want to come out of the ballgame. He wasn't very pleased when I took him out in the 15th."
The tale got the attention of Rays ace David Price, who was among the outraged parties to call for Striegel's firing.
Fosnacht added more to a fierce defense of his right to stay in the game.
Fosnacht finished with 17 strikeouts in his 14 frames. Rochester went on to win the game, 1-0, in 17 innings.
