Here is the broadcast schedule for the 2014 World Cup, including eight must-see games in the group stage.
Thursday, June 12
4 p.m., ESPN: Brazil vs. Croatia, Group A, Sao Paulo
The opener is always a must-see, but this will be high theater. Brazil expects its Samba Kings to win every World Cup, but with the chaos that has preceded the tournament and the nation hosting the event for the first time since 1950, the pressure to win will be immense. Will Neymar & Co. rise to the occasion or fold against the likes of Luka Modric and Mario Madzukic?
Friday, June 13
Noon, ESPN2: Mexico vs. Cameroon, Group A, Natal
3 p.m., ESPN: Spain vs. Netherlands, Group B, Salvador
Spain beat the Netherlands in the World Cup final four years ago in South Africa. The Dutch gets its chance for revenge in the Group B opener. Iniesta, Robben, Sneijder, van Persie and Xavi in an opener is a wealth of attacking talent. With Chile looming in the group, neither side can afford to play it close.
6 p.m., ESPN2: Chile vs. Australia, Group B, Cuiaba
Saturday, June 14
Noon, ABC: Colombia vs. Greece, Group C, Belo Horizonte
3 p.m., ABC: Uruguay vs. Costa Rica, Group D, Fortaleza
6 p.m., ESPN: England vs. Italy, Group D, Manaus
In a tough group that also includes Uruguay — whom England has never beaten in the World Cup — this game is vital. England hasn't been the same since its Euro 2012 quarterfinal loss to Italy on penalty kicks. It gets a chance in the opener to get off on the right foot, and show the Three Lions haven't gone completely toothless.
9 p.m., ESPN: Ivory Coast vs. Japan, Group C, Recife
Sunday, June 15
Noon, ABC: Switzerland vs. Ecuador, Group E, Brasilia
3 p.m., ABC: France vs. Honduras, Group E, Porto Alegre
6 p.m., ESPN: Argentina vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina, Group F, Rio de Janeiro
Monday, June 16

Noon, ESPN: Germany vs. Portugal, Group G, Salvador
Two of the world's top three teams. Arguably the world's best player in Cristiano Ronaldo. Throw in stars like Muller, Ozil and Reus on the German side, and Portugal looking for payback for a 1-0 loss in Euro 2012, and this game sells itself. A loss by either means having to beat both the U.S. and Ghana to ensure surviving Group G; anything else would be abysmal failure.
3 p.m., ESPN: Iran vs. Nigeria, Group F, Curitiba
6 p.m., ESPN: United States vs. Ghana, Group G, Natal
Sisyphus had his rock, the U.S. has Ghana. If the U.S. has any hope of surviving the Group of Death — which includes No. 2 Germany and No. 3 Portugal — it will need to win the opener against the Black Stars. The trouble is the U.S. has been eliminated from the last two World Cups at the hands of Ghana, including a 2-1 loss in extra time four years ago in South Africa.

The last time the teams played — in the 2002 World Cup — a young Landon Donovan wore Portugal out in a U.S. upset. A dozen years later, Donovan was one of the more shocking snubs of the entire field. And to make matters worse, the Americans' fullbacks are going to have to deal with Ronaldo.

Noon, ESPN: Italy vs. Uruguay, Group D, Natal
This group may have saved the best for last. Both teams already will have had to deal with England, and with the Brits enjoying a comparatively easy tilt against Costa Rica, Italy and Uruguay will have incentive to go for the win. Uruguay has tons of attacking talent in Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, while Italy has unpredictable Mario Balotelli.
Noon, ESPN2: Costa Rica vs. England, Group D, Belo Horizonte
4 p.m., ESPN: Japan vs. Colombia, Group C, Cuiaba
4 p.m., ESPN2: Greece vs. Ivory Coast, Group C, Fortaleza
Wednesday, June 25
Noon, ESPN: Nigeria vs. Argentina, Group F, Porto Alegre
Argentina hasn't gotten past the quarterfinals since a 1990 loss to Germany in the final, and haven't won since Diego Maradona dragged them to a title in 1986. Lionel Messi & Co. got a favorable draw, but they can't afford to let speedy Nigeria hit them on the counter. Nigeria looked devoid of ideas in the final third in their friendly loss to the U.S., but could punish Argentina if they're not careful.
