WASHINGTON – Israel launched a flurry of air strikes on targets across Gaza overnight Thursday as it dramatically ramped up its air campaign against Hamas.
Israel has launched a total of 800 attacks since the operation began three days ago, with 60 attacks Thursday morning, Haaretz reported.
Palestinian officials said at least 76 Palestinians have been killed in the operation.
One of the attacks hit a beachside café where customers were watching the World Cup match between Argentina and Germany. The Israeli Defense Force said it was investigating the incident, where eight people were killed.
Also hit was a car Israel said contained three Islamic Jihad militants who were involved in rocket attacks. The group confirmed its men were killed.
IDF spokesman Lt. Col Peter Lerner said Israel hit more than 320 targets overnight, as bombs rained down on rocket launching sites and tunnels.
Palestinian officials said eight family members, including five kids, were killed in a strike on two homes in southern Gaza.

The Israeli military said many of the rockets that have rained down on Israel were launched from homes in Gaza, putting civilians in harms way.
Israel's "Iron Dome" defenses have intercepted more than 70 rockets. The military said more than 442 projectiles have been launched at Israel since Tuesday.
Two long-range rockets were launched at Tel Aviv, and one got intercepted, Israel's military told Haaretz.
The remnants of one rocket launched from Gaza landed in a gas station south of the city.
Others have slammed into Israeli towns of Ashkelon north of Gazaat and Be'er Sheva.
"Gaza is on a knife edge," warned UN Secretary Ban Ki-Moon. The UN Security Council was to meet over the situation Thursday.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the operation "will expand and continue until the fire on our communities is over and the quiet is back."

As the aerial bombardment continued, Israel called up 20,000 reserves for a possible ground offensive.
"The ground option needs to be the last option and only if it is absolutely necessary. It is a carefully designed plan of action," said Lerner.
"We have long days of fighting ahead of us," Israeli defense minister Moshe Yaalon Tweeted.
He said Israel "will not tolerate rocket fire toward our towns and citizens."
