A Malaysian airliner was shot down over Ukraine and all 295 people aboard were killed when it crashed, the country's Interior Ministry said Thursday.
The Boeing 777 crashed near the Russian border after it was shot down by a rocket, an adviser to Ukraine's Interior Minister said.
Anton Gerashenko said on his Facebook page the plane was flying at 33,000 feet when it was hit by a missile fired from a Buk rocket launcher.
A missile from a 9K37 Buk Medium-range surface-to-air battery shot down the Malaysian jet.
A source told the Interfax news agency that the plane "began to drop, afterwards it was found burning on the ground on Ukrainian territory."
The flight MH17 was traveling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur and was likely loaded with tourists when it was downed.
Russia had no immediate response.
A Malaysia Airlines official confirmed the plane had crashed, and said on Twitter that "Malaysia Airlines has lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam. The last known position was over Ukrainian airspace. More details to follow."
The disappearance came just over four months after Malaysian Flight 370 vanished without a trace with 239 passengers and crew aboard.
The fate of that flight remains a mystery despite extensive searches in the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea.
On Thursday, there had been fighting in the region earlier in the day when a Ukrainian war plane was shot down, allegedly by the Russians.
But the Kremlin angrily denied reports it was to blame for the attack on the Ukrainian air force SU-25, which happened a few miles from the latest disaster.
The pilot of the downed fighter jet ejected and was later evacuated by Ukrainian forces.
"A military plane from the air force of the Russian Federation carried out a rocket strike on a Ukrainian air force SU-25 as it fulfilled its task over the territory of Ukraine," said Kiev's National Security and Defence Council.
It was unclear why a commercial airliner would be flying so close to a battle zone.
