Ride-sharing service Lyft gets green light in NYC

Controversial ride-sharing app Lyft will launch in New York City Friday evening now that a Manhattan Supreme Court judge signed off on an agreement between the company and the city in the morning.

The company is nixing the model it uses in other cities where strangers give rides to passengers for donations, and will instead use Taxi and Limousine Commission-vetted black car drivers, according to court papers.

Lyft will also have fixed rates, rather than take donations.

It will be allowed to submit a proposal to the TLC for a ride-sharing pilot program.

The company triggered a backlash from the city and taxi industry after it planned a rogue launch in Brooklyn and Queens on July 11 where New Yorkers would moonlight as cabbies on the side.

A Supreme Court judge slammed on the brakes just four hours before the illegal cabs were set to hit the streets.

Lyft has since launched its own TLC-approved black car base, and signed agreements with 14 other bases in New York City, court papers state.
