It was the offseason all over again for the Yankees.
This time, however, it will take awhile to determine whether this money was well spent.
The Yankees went on an international spending spree on the first day international free agents could sign with teams, reportedly spending more than $14 million on a handful of prospects.
According to various reports, the Yankees came to terms with shortstop Dermis Garcia, ranked No. 1 on MLB.com's list of the top 30 international prospects, for a $3 million signing bonus.
They also swiped the second-ranked prospect, Dominican third baseman Nelson Gomez, for $2.25 million and the fifth-ranked prospect, Dominican outfielder Juan DeLeon, for $2 million. All of those players are 16. Korean shortstop Hyo-Jun Park, ranked No. 13, is an 18-year-old eligible to being playing immediately.
It will cost the big-spending Yankees. Each team is allotted a $700,000 base and a bonus pool based on the team's record in 2013 for the international signing period. The Yankees' bonus pool total for this year is $2,193,100, which means Wednesday's signings likely will result in a penalty — and it may be significant.
In the most severe penalty, teams that exceed the pool by more than 15 percent are not allowed to sign a player for more than $300,000 during the next two signing periods, in addition to paying a 100 percent tax on the pool overage.
