Starz is moving forward with a second season of "Outlander" after airing just one episode of the new period drama.
Season Two will be at least 13 episodes, and will be based on the second book of Diana Gabaldon's eight-book "Outlander" series titled "Dragonfly in Amber."
"Outlander"s premiere episode has averaged more than 5 million viewers in its first week, with nearly 1 million watching it via a free on-demand sneak peek prior to its Aug. 9 debut on Starz.
The drama follows the story of Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743 where she falls in love with another man, the young Scottish warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).
"Outlander"s first 16-episode season, filmed on location in Scotland, will conclude its initial eight-episode run on Sept. 27, with the second half of the season premiering early next year. No debut date for Season Two has been announced.
The "Outlander" book series — which has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide — was adapted for television by creator Ronald D. Moore ("Battlestar Galactica"), who serves as executive producer with Jim Kohlberg.
