Eminem, Rihanna rock the house at MetLife

Jay Z and Beyonce named their tour "On The Run," but it's Eminem and Rihanna who are this summer's real rebels.

The double-headlined "Monster" tour arrived at MetLife Stadium on Saturday for the first of two successive nights and compared to Jay and Bey's aristocratic air, Eminem and Rihanna put on a show that was deliberately rougher and readier.

The opening skit – a spoof on "Silence Of The Lambs" in which Ri-Ri visits Eminem in a high security prison – gave notice of the R-rated material that would follow. After a short opening set of duets featuring a solid take on "Run This Town" (where Em stood in for Jay Z), Rihanna was first up with a solo set that oozed sex, but oddly left you feeling flaccid.

Wearing a Mötley Crüe t-shirt and combat boots, the Barbadian starlet pouted her way through a sultry, rock-chick routine with middling results. She writhed suggestively during "Cockiness (Love It)," invited everyone to ride her "pony" during "Jump" and patted her crotch almost constantly throughout "Birthday Cake." Yet for all the provocative gestures and lyrics, there was a strangely listless, dead-eyed feel to Rihanna's moves. The hits were present and correct, but her charisma was much less so. At certain points, she danced like a stripper nearing the end of her shift, making a mental note that she needs to buy some cat food and toilet roll on the way home.

It was Eminem who really supplied the fireworks – both figuratively and literally. After nearly two decades in the game, the Detroit rapper is fiercely guarding his status as a bad-boy and it's working well for him. With the anger still in his belly, his producer/hype man Mr Porter by his side and a bombastic band behind him, Eminem riled up the MetLife crowd convincingly.

"Sorry for f**king up your lives," he quipped at one point. But no one inside the stadium was likely to call him out in being a corrupting influence. Instead, they sang along with glee to classics such as "The Real Slim Shady" and a spine-chilling "Lose Control," as well as cheering wildly as he embarked on his dizzying verse on the recent "Rap God" single. As his 2013 album "The Marshall Mathers LP 2″ showed, the demons that drive him clearly remain in place, but watching Eminem turn them into a white-hot fury on stage is still massively exciting.

The duo crossed paths again to deliver the obvious finale of "The Monster" – the No. 1 duet which spawned this tour. But despite their history of chart successes, it's disappointing to note the lack of chemistry between them. The "Monster" tour was supposed to see Rihanna and Eminem roaring in unison but instead, it was the latter of the two who turned out to be the show's real beast.
