WATER MILL, N.Y. — A street sign memorializing a nun killed in a Hamptons hit-and-run has been removed after local residents called it depressing.

Newsday said Monday that the sign designating "Sister Jackie's Way" in Water Mill was removed last week.

Sister Jacqueline Walsh

Sister Jacqueline Walsh died as she walked along the road in 2012. She was attending a retreat at the Sisters of Mercy convent nearby.

Southampton Town Highway Superintendent Alex Gregor installed the $45 sign last year. Neighbors complained that it was a painful reminder of tragedy.

The Town Board asked Gregor to remove it, but he refused. Then parks employees took it down, and he put it back up.

He says he ultimately removed it because the nuns lamented the controversy. A representative for the order hasn't immediately returned a call Monday.
