Dunkin’ Donuts goes dark to compete with Starbucks

The coffee wars are heating up: On Monday, Dunkin' Donuts launches its first dark roast coffee in a bid to compete with Starbucks.

In July, after Dunkin' stock took a dive following disappointing quarterly results, CEO Nigel Travis called the dark roast "critical to our war with Starbucks."

According to Dunkin' Donuts executive Michelle King, the new brew is "bittersweet, full-bodied, rich and aromatic, leaving guests with a bold start and smooth finish," while the original is more "fruity, lively and sweet."

The fresh coffee follows Dunkin's launch earlier this month of Colombian Packaged Coffee, described as its "first-ever single-origin packaged coffee."

No word yet on how many origins a box of donuts has.
