Girardi considers sitting out Jeter for weekend in Boston

On Tuesday, Derek Jeter left open the possibility he won't play at Fenway Park this weekend.

On Wednesday, Joe Girardi did the same — which increases the chances Thursday night's game against the Orioles will be the last of Jeter's Hall of Fame-bound career.

"No, not yet,'' Girardi said when asked if he talked to Jeter about sitting out the three-game series against the blood rivals. "And that's a better question when we get there.''

Jeter said the same thing Tuesday when he explained he was taking it one game at a time.

As he did last year with Mariano Rivera, Girardi will leave the decision on whether to play or watch up to Jeter if the Yankees are eliminated from playoff chase.

"I will leave that up to him, very similar with what I did for Mo,'' Girardi said. "In my mind I really thought Mo would want to play an inning in center field, and it never happened. I will leave it up to Derek. I don't see why I would do it any different.''

Rivera opted not to pitch in any of the three final games in Houston last year after his emotional final appearance at Yankee Stadium.
