You would think that Nicholas Sparks is the master of modern romance. After all, he's the writer who is responsible for giving us The Notebook, A Walk To Remember, and this weekend's The Best of Me. His films play on themes of true love, tragedy, and the hope that beautiful and affluent people will always find a way to be together.

Sure, we're all kind of suckers for a good kiss in the rain, but are Nicholas Sparks' stories really as passionate, sexy, heart-breaking as romances come? We would argue no. In fact, here are 10 beautiful love stories that put Nicholas Sparks to shame.

1

'It Happened One Night'

Claudette Colbert plays a disenchanted heiress who decides to run away from her family's posh pad in Florida to be with the rich guy she loves in New York City. Only problem? She's got to slum it on a bus to get there and her dad has made her disappearance front page news. Enter Clark Gable. He's a down-on-his-luck newspaper man who corners Colbert's character in an effort to get a good story. The only problem is that he winds up falling in love with her. If the plot sounds vaguely familiar, it's because it helped set the tone for an entire century of romantic comedies. However, this one is the first, the best, and possibly the most romantic.

'Say Anything…'

It's tempting to distill Say Anything… down to just John Cusack holding up a boom box and lamenting that "I gave her my heart, and she gave me a pen." The thing that makes this film so amazingly romantic is how full and rich the whole thing is. Lloyd Dobler might be the character we talk about most, but everyone from Ione Skye's Diane Court to Lily Taylor's Corey reeks of truth. It's the truth in this film that makes Lloyd and Diane's romance so extraordinary.

'Sid & Nancy'

Love is a many splendored thing, but it's also a corrosive nightmare. When two damaged people love each other, they can wind up saving each other or tearing each other apart. Such was the case for real-life lovebirds Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungeon. The duo were punk rock royalty who delighted in flouting convention, shooting up drugs, and being together. This classic film starring Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb tells their tragic story.

'A Royal Affair'

Do you like Marie Antoinette? Well, imagine if Marie didn't just party and eat cake, but instead she fell in love with a brilliant, progressive doctor. And then imagine if they quietly took over the country from the king. And then imagine what would happen if the aristocrats cottoned to this secret love affair and political alliance. Yeah, it would be tragic. It also would be the real life inspiration for this gloriously romantic Danish film co-starring Anna Karenina's Alicia Vikander and Hannibal's Mads Mikkelsen.

'Blue Is The Warmest Color'

Blue Is The Warmest Color might have made international headlines for its explicit love scenes, but its draw on so many audiences has been its unflinching portrayal of a romance from its flirtatious start to hopeless end. Adèle Exarchopoulos plays Adele, a French teen who struggles to connect with anything until she meets a beguiling art student with blue hair named Emma (Léa Seydoux).

'Pride and Prejudice' (2005)

It's almost impossible to think about romance and not think about Jane Austen's Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. Pride & Prejudice has been adapted countless times for film and television, but the most traditionally romantic take on the tale might be Joe Wright's recent film. Keira Knightley is lit like an angel and Matthew MacFayden plays Darcy less like a proud prick and more like a socially awkward sweetheart.

'Young Goethe In Love'

The English title of this German-language Goethe biopic is an obvious ploy to get Shakespeare In Love fans on board, but it's actually far more romantic than the Oscar-winning flick. Alexander Fehling (aka the Nazi soldier who wanted Diane Kruger to sign a napkin for his baby son in Inglourious Basterds) stars as the young Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He's a young rebel in love with poetry, but his rich dad sends him off to the provinces to be a lawyer. However, that only means that Goethe is put in the path of the beautiful young Lotte and it's that romance that sets off Goethe's legendary literary career…

'Before Sunrise' (1995)

Before Sunrise is a film that is inherently about the glory and fragility of love. Two students, one American and one French, meet by happenstance on a train and impulsively decide to spent the night together roaming Vienna. They discuss their pasts, contemplate the future, and argue over the true nature of love. What's so enchanting about this film is realizing that every second of the film is about two people struggling to find the courage to connect with one another — and that perhaps is the essence of all romance.

'In The Mood For Love'

Chinese auteur Kar Wai Wong has been dazzling audiences for decades with his gorgeous films that tear away at human relationships. However, In The Mood For Love is arguably his sexiest film. The movie stars Asian megastars Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung as 1960s neighbors who get to know each other when they suspect their spouses are having an affair together. The two soon fall for each other, but don't want to give into temptation the way their own wayward spouses have.

'You've Got Mail'

You could say that Nora Ephron's modern take on the Hollywood classic, The Shop Around The Corner, is overflowing with romantic comedy clichés, but we prefer to look at it as the platonic ideal of a romantic comedy. The 1998 film nodded and borrowed from every great romcom of the 20th century and has cast a looming shadow over the genre in the 21st. There's no romantic comedy made today that doesn't feel a need to nod to the film or mock it. That's not a sign of its corniness — it's proof of its perfection. It's a dream of a movie that from the very first frame tells us that dreams really can come true.
