‘Good Wife’ costume designer talks Julianna Margulies’ looks

In addition to its superb plotting and characterization, "The Good Wife" is justly famous for an exquisite wardrobe that helps tell the story. The Post continues to explore this side of the show with costume designer Dan Lawson.

Last week Lawson talked about helping frame elegant, but slightly flashy, looks for drug-dealer Lemond Bishop (Mike Colter). Now he tells us how Julianna Margulies' wardrobe is going to change if her character, Alicia Florrick, ends up running for state's attorney.

Julianna Marguiles' character Alicia's style has evolved this season on "The Good Wife."

Can you tell us about Alicia's evolution from politician's wife to potential politician herself?
When we first met her, she'd returned to work with no money. She had been in the front page of the Chicago papers and all she wanted to do was blend in and do her job — a new job she was scared to death of. She didn't want to attract attention. She also knew she was going back to work with people who were maybe 10 years her junior.

Through the seasons her life has changed, whether it's gaining more confidence as a woman and in her sexuality, or gaining confidence as a mother, a lawyer, a boss or a good friend.

I think Alicia's wardrobe this season is more elegant, more chic than in the previous season. She's taken a step a little closer to the way Diane dresses. And I don't mean the same silhouette but the same sophistication and confidence it takes to wear some of these pieces. I definitely dialed her color down where it's more muted tones, and to my eye more chic.

Yes but politicians have to be "relatable," and Alicia's thousand-dollar suits are out of reach for most women. Would she have to dial down the chic?
I don't know if it's dialing it down as much as it is watering it down to appeal to as many people as possible. Does Alicia really care about running? If she were to do it she would find reasons to care, but she's spent so long getting to where she is that at this point she's like, "This is who I am." Will she suddenly start wearing less expensive clothing? I don't think so. Color would be a big thing. Maybe she's on the trail and it would be a little more American in color, if you will, less neutral tones. It's certainly about wanting to be seen and stand out in a crowd. If she were to run it'd be against men in dark suits, navy suits, how is she going to be noticed? You want to be noticed, but not too much — does it put people off?

There's a sense of politicians putting on a facade when they go campaigning. It's the suit as battle gear.
I think politicians have somebody who's helping them with clothing decisions, so it's almost as if they're putting on a costume. If Alicia ends up running, I'm going to approach her wardrobe as if she were putting on a political costume.
