Attempted rapist used tree to escape: cops

A creep tried to rape a woman inside a Stuyvesant Town apartment building, then climbed down a tree to escape, cops said.

The perv followed the 20-year-old woman into the building's elevator and pounced on her around 4 a.m. police said.

She was able to fight him off and screamed for help, cops said.

He was caught on video surveillance jetting down a flight of stairs before climbing down a tree outside the building complex, on First Avenue between East 14th Street and 20th Street.

He was last seen wearing blue and white sneakers and a black hooded sweatshirt.
