Duke Porn Star Belle Knox Inspired This Week’s Episode Of ‘SVU’

Wednesday night's episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, titled "Pornstar's Requiem," chronicled the sexual assault against an 18-year-old college girl who paid her tuition by starring in rape-fantasy porn videos. The explicit episode didn't just catch the attention of average viewers — it also intrigued Duke University porn star, Belle Knox.

Law & Order: SVU famously features episodes with narratives "ripped from the headlines," and Belle Knox said in a blog post on xojane.com that, while she's always been obsessed with the series, this particular episode was "incredibly hard but insanely riveting to watch."

The episode follows Evie (Hannah Marks), who just turned 18 and answers a modeling ad in hopes she could make quick cash for her looming college tuition. The modeling agency turns out to be a hardcore porn website, but Evie goes along with it and leaves with a $3,000 paycheck. Two boys at the fictional Hudson University in New York City come across the "18 With a Bang" porn site and recognize their "mousey" classmate right away. They invite her to a party, corner her in a bathroom, rape her and film it. The rest of the episode covers the trial and what exactly constitutes as rape when the victim is a rape-fantasy porn star.

After interviewing with Duke's school newspaper and speaking out about her experience, Belle Knox took to the Internet, which has both empowered her and damned her in the public eye, to star in her own web series, Becoming Belle Knox. The series offers her own poignant point of view about becoming an independent woman who makes her own financial choices while dealing with the slut-shaming that comes along with her choice of profession.

Knox isn't pissed at SVU producer Warren Leight, who was in constant contact with Knox throughout the production process, but more so at the societal stigmas surrounding rape and porn actors. Knox mentions she doesn't discuss her real-life rape often because it feeds into the ignorant argument that suggests a root cause for her work. But SVU makes sure to bring this up and attack it head-on. There's a ton of talk about rape fantasy, framing, and the two boys accused not knowing "you could rape a girl like that." Detective Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) keeps it simple: "She said, 'No.'" Done and done.

Knox explains in her xojane post that she's extremely pleased the episode doesn't depict her character as a "caricature of the porn industry, but as an imperfect young woman who made some controversial choices that did not define her." The episode is a tough one to watch, but completely enthralling, depicting both sides of the case realistically and maturely. This "ripped from the headlines" special is definitely a must-watch.
