They say honesty is the best policy, but there are some things you should just keep to yourself.
A new study released Thursday from CareerBuilder has compiled the 10 most unbelievable excuses employees have used for calling in sick in 2014, ranging from "I just put a casserole in the oven" to "I woke up in a good mood and didn't want to ruin it."
This year alone, 28 percent of employees have called in sick to work when they were feeling well. The reasons? Thirty percent simply didn't feel like going to work, 29 percent wanted to take a day to relax, 21 percent used the day to attend a doctor's appointment, 19 percent wanted to catch up on sleep and 11 percent wanted to avoid the bad weather.
Rather than just faking the flu, here are 10 of the most dubious excuses employees have given for their absence:
1. I just put a casserole in the oven.
2. My plastic surgery for enhancement purposes needed some "tweaking" to get it just right.
3. I was sitting in the bathroom and my feet and legs fell asleep. When I stood up, I fell and broke my ankle.
4. I was at the casino all weekend and still had money left to play with on Monday morning.
5. I woke up in a good mood and didn't want to ruin it.
6. I had a "lucky night" and didn't know where I was.
7. I got stuck in the blood pressure machine at the grocery store and couldn't get out.
8. I had a gallstone I wanted to heal holistically.
9. I set my uniform on fire by putting it in the microwave to dry.
10. I accidentally got on a plane.
Although most employers gave their employees the benefit of the doubt, 31 percent followed up to make sure they were telling the truth. Sixty-six percent have asked for a doctor's note, 49 percent have called the employee and 15 percent drove past the employee's home. Nearly one in five of the 2,203 employers surveyed fired an employee for calling in sick with a fake excuse.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, 53 percent of the 3,103 workers surveyed say they have gone into work sick, believing that otherwise the work wouldn't get done, while 38 percent say they still went in when under the weather because they couldn't afford to miss a day of pay.
