What The Decider Team Streamed This Week

We spent the last month recommending plenty of great shows and movies to stream online, but what have the members of the Decider enjoyed in the last week? We'd like to share that with you, too — and tell you where to stream them, of course.

Opening Night

I rewatched John Cassavettes' striking and moody film, Opening Night, starring his wife and frequent collaborator Gena Rowlands. Rowlands stars as a forty-something stage actress in rehearsals of a new show. When a fan is killed in an accident while pursuing an autograph, Rowlands' character starts to have a breakdown, and she struggles with figuring out her role as an aging actress. The final sequence is incredible, with Rowlands stumbling into the opening night performance fall-down drunk, somehow managing to go on with the show (and improvise a very long scene with her husband and co-star, Cassavettes).  —Tyler Coates

Carrie

I hate horror films because I value my sleep and heart rate too much, but I do enjoy scary movies with a good story. That's why I like Stephen King's movies — because there's more to his movies than suspense and hideous mirrors (*cough*Oculus*cough*). This week, I agreed to watch the first Carrie, and now I hold a special place in my heart for it's '70s pop music soundtrack and bitchy high school girls with big hair. Even though she blew up her school and gets a bad rep after all these years, Carrie is perfect and just needed to do what she had to do at the time. If I had super powers and had pig's blood dumped on my head while everyone laughed at me, I would most likely destroy everyone, being that I'm 85% vegetarian and have a blood phobia. The original Carrie is a great watch for people who are afraid of scary movies but want to try one anyway. I really enjoyed it! —Jaclyn Kessel

Your Sister's Sister

I wish I could get over Mark Duplass, but this phase is proving more and more difficult to break. This week, in addition to The League, I streamed Lynn Shelton's rom-dramedy Your Sister's Sister. Duplass plays Jack, who is still grieving from his brother's death a year earlier. He finds comfort in his brother's old girlfriend, Iris (Emily Blunt), but also in her sister, Hannah (Rosemarie DeWitt). Like every Lynn Shelton movie, there's a lot of awkward sex and unintentional betrayal, plus a lot of winding, candid dialogue. Definitely queue this movie if you're in the mood for a good story that isn't too heavy. —Olivia Armstrong

Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown

This week I binge-watched Season One of Anthony Bourdain's CNN show, Parts Unknown on Netflix. Other than Bourdain's incredible narratives and the cinematic beauty of this show, I love it because this show and its move to CNN was Bourdain's "Fuck you" to networks that wanted him to cover tired and crowd-pleasing topics like "America's best sandwiches" instead of, say, exposing the food traditions born of political conflict in the Congo or showing the cultural and culinary beauty of Columbia that gets shamefully passed over due to the country's reputation from drug wars in days past. In this show, Bourdain is not afraid to ask about touchy topics while praising each place's unique flavor profile. I can personally recommend the first episode "Myanmar," as it inspired me to try and figure out how to recreate the amazing looking, flavorful dishes and spice combinations that I would never have been exposed to otherwise. It also reveals shots of breathtaking temples in remote parts of the country that most people, even the well traveled, do not get to see. DO NOT watch this show hungry! —Terri Ciccone

The Producers

This week I revisited one of my all-time faves: 1968's The Producers. The Mel Brooks-written and directed cult comedy has it all: wonderfully zany expressions courtesy of Zero Mostel, hilariously harebrained scheming (specifically, a plot to strike it rich by purposely sinking a Broadway musical), and a gorgeous New York City of a bygone era. Oh, and perhaps the funniest song parody ("Springtime For Hitler") ever captured on film. —Conrad Doucette

How to Get Away With Murder

Obviously I've been binge watching a ton of House Hunters and House Hunters International (and Gilmore Girls). However, I've also been keeping up with How To Get Away With Murder on Hulu Plus. I was iffy on the pilot — it felt a little too much like Legally Blonde meets The Secret History for my liking — but the second episode was fun, funny, and upped the ante with the crazy plot twists and reveals. I would definitely recommend giving it a try. —Meghan O'Keefe
