Leave Anne Hathaway Alone! Why The ‘Interstellar’ Star Deserves Your Respect

A couple of years ago, Interstellar star Anne Hathaway won an Academy Award for her performance in Les Miserables. She lost weight for the role, shaved her head, sang her butt off, and even made this hard-hearted, super cynical writer cry (multiple times). However, her triumph was to be short-lived. In fact, I'm not sure she enjoyed her success at all. Because in the midst of her successful Oscar season, she had to constantly address the burning issue of "Hathahate."

"Hathahate" is a term used to describe the irrational hatred people feel when they see Anne Hathaway doing something innocuous like walking a red carpet, smiling too much, or breathing. You can tell if you or someone you love suffers from "Hathahate" if whenever they see a photo of Anne Hathaway, they roll their eyes, scoff, and say something to the effect of, "Ugh."

What's the source of all this "Hathahate?" Why did Hathaway become such a social pariah? She didn't beat up a spouse or get busted for drunk driving. She tries too hard.

Yup, that's usually why people don't like her. Anne Hathaway's big sin is that she's a trier. She sincerely puts effort into everything she does, and why shouldn't she? It's a sign of respect to her craft, her peers, and her audience. And in fact, her work ethic means that she's been able to accomplish great feats that no other actress in Hollywood has.

Anne Hathaway can pretty much do it all, and she's pretty much done it all… She successfully pulled off being a seductive Catwoman. She can out-weird Johnny Depp in a Tim Burton flick. She's held her own doing comedy opposite Steve Carrell.  She also held her own doing comedy opposite Meryl Streep. Before Amy Adams had the "real life Disney princess" thing on lockdown, Anne Hathaway starred as princess in two Disney films and sold the shit out of the bonkers Ella Enchanted. She's good with the kids! But Anne Hathaway has also gone dark, in indies like Rachel Getting Married and in the seminal Brokeback Mountain. Oh, did you forget she was in Brokeback Mountain? Yeah, Anne Hathaway, her boobs, and a bunch of wigs were in Brokeback Mountain.

Anne Hathaway has won, and been nominated for, numerous Oscars. Anne Hathaway sang at the Oscars. Anne Hathaway hosted the Oscars. Anne Hathaway has successfully acted on stage. Anne Hathaway has done Shakespeare In The Park. More than that, she is one of the few Hollywood celebs whose done Shakespeare In The Park who still (quietly) supports free theater for the people of New York City a big (monetary) way.

And yet, we often don't talk about all the good that she's done. We talk about not liking her. Why? And again, why don't "we" like her? Because she's hard-working, eager, and overly sincere.

That sentiment is not only unfair. It's sexist.

When male actors put this much effort into their work, they are lauded. Think of the praise that Christian Bale gets for gaining and losing weight, losing himself in an accent, or yelling at a crew member playing with a light. When Anne Hathaway gains and loses weight, attempts an accent, or is pleasant to everyone behind-the-scenes, she gets nothing but ire.

What grates people about Hathaway is how eager she seems, but really, without that enthusiasm to tackle any job presented to her, she wouldn't be so amazing.
