Get a backup plan for DeMarco Murray

Fantasy Super Bowl week began on Thursday for most leagues, and continues today with a pair of Saturday matchups. For many owners of arguably the best running back in fantasy football, though, the stress and worry of knowing the official status of DeMarco Murray has lasted all week long.

The Cowboys and Colts do not kick off until 4:25 pm, which means you may not find out about Murray's availability until after the early games start. His left hand was surgically repaired earlier this week. Thankfully, though, there seems to be much optimism he will be able to play, after he was limited in practices. How effective he can be remains to be seen, but you cannot afford to reserve him if he starts, and there are no gameday reports of him having a limited workload.

As we advised you a few weeks ago, it was smart to have the NFL backups of your top starters at RB on your roster in case of an situation like this one. So hopefully you added Joseph Randle just in case of any setbacks for Murray. He likely would be the main ball carrier if there is any forthcoming negative news on Murray. Lance Dunbar would figure in the mix on passing downs and would be a desperation fill-in in PPR formats. Randle has big-play potential and would serve as a more than adequate fill-in. Murray does appear to be on the path to playing, but it's a good idea to have some insurance just in case of any twists in the plot.

The Cowboys still have much to play for in the NFC, and need their star RB to help them wrap up the NFC East. Fantasy owners need that same RB to help them win it all this week. Hopefully Murray can tough it out on Sunday, and the latest reports as of this writing indicated he is going to attempt to play.

Pencil him in as active, and you will be able to survive if you are adequately prepared for any changes in the reports.

  • Colts WR T.Y. Hilton (hamstring) is looking iffy for Week 16. It would be a major loss for his owners should he sit out, as Hilton has played at an elite level this year. The Colts don't have much maneuverability in the AFC playoff picture and could elect to sit him. Donte Moncrief has big-play promise and could be a viable replacement if needed.
  • Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) appears to be on track to start against the Browns. He has been able to practice in full and should at least give you respectable overall production. There are a few cases in which fantasy owners simply need a decent starter at QB this week, and Newton fills the bill and may have some upside if he can run well.
  • Falcons WR Julio Jones (hip) appears to be in danger of missing his second consecutive game. Harry Douglas caught 10 passes for 131 yards when Jones sat out last week, and would be a terrific play again vs. a very shaky Saints pass defense.
  • Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins (ankle) could be a game-time decision against Baltimore. Andre Johnson (concussion) looks like he will return, but with Case Keenum at QB versus a tough defensive front, you should strongly consider options other than the Texans WRs.
  • Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph (ankle, knee) continues to have trouble staying healthy and may miss the game against the Dolphins. If you need a TE alternative, consider Baltimore's Owen Daniels, who has the revenge-game motive versus the Texans. Also consider Zach Ertz (vs. Redskins) and Tim Wright (vs. Jets) as desperation options as they face opponents who have been very vulnerable to opposing TEs this year.
