Nets rewind: A glaring weakness easily exposed

Here are three thoughts on the Nets' 105-80 loss to the Bulls Wednesday night in Chicago:

1. With Brook Lopez (back) and Mirza Teletovic (hip pointer) both missing Wednesday's game against the stout frontline of the Bulls, it was little surprise the Nets had trouble inside.

Not only were the Nets outrebounded (57-44), with Pau Gasol getting 16 rebounds and Taj Gibson getting 10, but they were dominated in the paint from a scoring standpoint.

While the Bulls went 21-for-37 (56.7 percent) on shots in the paint, the Nets were a dismal 19-for-46 (41.3 percent) on the same shots and had 11 blocked – with Mason Plumlee getting six shots blocked, contributing to the Nets going just 4-for-14 on second-chance opportunities. This was especially costly in a game like this, where the Nets were short-handed.

The Nets aren't exactly an imposing team in the paint when they have everyone healthy, but with their two best-scoring bigs out they proved just how limited they can be there – particularly against a team as big and physical as the Bulls.

2. After Sergey Karasev impressed in the second half of Monday's loss to Cleveland – scoring 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting in 14 minutes – Nets coach Lionel Hollins gave Karasev a shot in the starting lineup Wednesday, inserting him for Bojan Bogdanovic. Karasev put in a respectable performance, finishing with six points and six rebounds in 31 minutes.

Though Karasev hasn't played much in his NBA career, with 22 games in Cleveland last year and spot duty this season, he is only 21 years old and was a first-round pick who was seen as having a lot of upside just 18 months ago.

Given the way the Nets have been playing, there's no reason not to give him some minutes and see how he does.

3. On the other end of that decision by Hollins was the removal of Bogdanovic from the starting lineup for the first time as an NBA player in either a preseason or regular-season game. Bogdanovic went 0-for-5 from the field in 16 minutes, though he did have three steals.

Over his last 10 games, Bogdanovic is shooting 34.6 percent from the field, 25 percent from 3-point range and averaging 7.4 points. Bogdanovic's biggest strengths are his shooting and productivity on offense, so if he's struggling at that end he isn't giving you much. That's why it made sense Hollins wanted to get a different look by putting Karasev out there.

This isn't to say Bogdanovic is a lost cause – he's in his first season in the NBA, going through a game-heavy schedule against a higher level of competition for the first time. He was going to have his ups and downs, and it will be a surprise if he's not back in a significant role soon.
