Ahead of the NBA's full Christmas Day slate, NBA TV and Turner analyst Rick Fox talks Knicks, Kobe Bryant and Steve Kerr with The Post's Justin Terranova.
Q: Why did you think Kobe Bryant to the Knicks would be a good idea?
A: My thought of him connecting with Phil [Jackson] and Derek [Fisher] was obviously selfish. Selfish because I know in that system he'd be able to relax with what he's been able to do so well for so many years and help Phil and Derek's transition. New York would appreciate and love him. I know Carmelo [Anthony] would grow a lot quicker in the system under Kobe's guidance. New York at this stage doesn't appear to be as an attractive place to land for Kobe when it comes to competing for a championship as I thought it might be, but neither does the Lakers.
Q: What has been the biggest issue for the Knicks?
A: It's been an extremely difficult adjustment to the triangle for players who are used to seeing the game a certain way. No system is going to be worth its weight in gold if players don't have the skill set to execute it. And right now you have a group of players in New York whose basketball IQs are being challenged. … Some of them are trying to hone their skills for the system, and if they can't, they'll be gone.
Q: How has Carmelo fared in the new offense?
A: It'd be unfair to say that starts and ends with him. If that mentality is maintained, they are going to continue to look the way they look. That's too isolating and it leads him to think that there's more than he needs to do. Until that teams shifts out of individual survivor mode then they are going to maintain the status they have right now, which is a lack of consistency, chemistry, trust and faith in what they are attempting to do in a challenging system.
Q: Are you confident Fisher is meant for the sidelines?
A: I am — 100 percent. Having known him and his character, I have great faith in his ability to handle the adversity that he is facing right now. I have great faith that he'd remain calm and poised and focused and driven to figure out this equation. Especially with Phil behind him and the patience Phil will have, it's a great situation to be in.
Q: What has been the key to Steve Kerr's success with the Warriors?
A: I think you have to credit the players first and foremost. Steve Kerr, I think, brought his own identity to what Mark Jackson started. He brought the screws and reins to tighten in on who they are and the ball movement and the reliance on each other.
