When Tania Ahsan received a 4-month-old English bulldog puppy as a gift from her boyfriend in 2009, she wasn't initially sold on the idea.
"It was a really sweet gesture, but I was working crazy hours at the time and I'd never had a pet before, not even so much as a goldfish," says 31-year-old Ahsan, a paralegal who had to take her new pup, Maya, to the vet for everything from kennel cough to eye surgery during the first few weeks. "And then I broke up with the boyfriend, so I was doing it all on my own. Little did I know, Maya would turn out to be the best present I'd ever received in my life."

Born in Bangladesh, Ahsan was raised by her grandparents, and they navigated life as a tightly knit threesome. The family relocated to Los Angeles in her teens, and even after Ahsan moved to New York's Upper East Side she continued to make frequent trips back to the West Coast.
When Ahsan's grandfather succumbed to cancer in 2012, she was devastated.
"I'm an only child and I just never thought there would be a time when they weren't around," says Ahsan. "It was such a huge loss and I kind of retreated. I didn't want to talk to people."
It was then, three years after Maya first came into her life, when Ahsan realized how much she had come to depend on the wrinkly pooch.
"I took long walks with Maya," Ahsan recalls. "She was the reason I would get up in the morning."
During those daily jaunts, she began photographing Maya and posting images to the dog's Instagram account, @maya_on_the_move. As New York businesses reposted the photos, the account began to attract a fan base outside of Ahsan's usual social network.

Not long after, a married friend gave Ahsan all of the leftover props from her wedding photo booth for Maya to pose with. Then another friend binged on a sale at Party City for additional accessories. After that, Ahsan says PetSmart began sending her costumes and dog clothes to play with. From there, Maya's account went viral.

Now, over 60,000 regular followers squeal over images of Maya trotting around NYC and dressing up in absurd costumes at home — in get-ups that range from the Statue of Liberty to Miley Cyrus.
"It was never my intention to have this happen," Ahsan says of Maya's burgeoning fame. "Like, who knew my dog was Brad Pitt? She'll get fan mail from people I don't know. Just the other day, she received an e-mail from a woman who wrote to say that she is handicapped and Maya's photos make her so happy."
As Ahsan currently tends to her ailing grandmother, she can relate to the sentiment.
"Whatever you are going through, [dogs] are able to bring humor to your life when you are feeling low," she says. "Maya is a joy. I honestly don't know if I would have gotten through the hard times without her."
