5 huge NFL stars who might retire (but probably won’t)

With apologies to the 1972 Dolphins, nobody in sports stays undefeated and untied forever, except Father Time. With the Super Bowl bringing the NFL season to a close, here are five players who could (and possibly should) retire, but probably won't.

Frank Gore

He is going to be 32 years old when the season starts, downright elderly by the standards of an NFL running back. With 2,636 career touches, a bruising running style and surgically repaired knees, that's Methuselah. Gore can still play, but with the 49ers seemingly bracing for his departure, will it be in San Francisco?

The wide receiver has 1,048 catches for 14,078 yards on a potential Hall of Fame resume. He was phased out of the Colts offense, limited on a surgically repaired knee and due to turn 36 during this coming season. Will he still want to be playing on that November birthday?

Welker isn't the biggest guy in the world to begin with, and his frightening litany of concussions may finally have convinced him to hang it up after 11 seasons. Fox Sports reported Welker, who turns 34 in May, is weighing retirement after a year in which he finished with just 49 receptions and suffered a third concussion inside of two seasons with the Broncos. Bring a gym rat can only go so far, and one can only tempt fate but so long.

The future Hall of Fame quarterback may still love the game, and even love putting in the work, but he clearly was hurt and not himself over the second half of the season — most startlingly in the Broncos' divisional round loss to the Colts. A report this week said Manning is home in New Orleans working with a trainer to gear up for his 18th season, while another said the Broncos may have reservations about simply rubber-stamping Manning's return without scrutinizing the results of a physical exam. Could a stalemate lead Manning to walk away?

Beast Mode is just 28, but Seahawks general manager John Schneider told Seattle radio on Tuesday the bruising running back hasn't made up his mind about playing next year, following an eventful Super Bowl week and last-minute defeat. "Whether or not he wants to play next year, I can't answer that," Schneider said. "I don't know if he knows at this juncture." He added Lynch "needs to find out where he's at" so the two sides can talk about a new contract. They might need a new running back.
